GENESIS SCOTTISH OPEN
BARBASOL CHAMPIONSHIP

The Genesis Scottish Open is a professional golf tournament in Scotland, and is one of five tournaments that are part of the Rolex Series, which identifies it as one of the European Tour’s premier events. It has been played on various courses, but in recent years it has been played on a links course, appealing to players who wish to gain experience before the Open, which takes place in the following week.

Since 1987 it has, together with John Deere Classic, been the last chance to qualify for The Open. It has been part of the Open Qualifying Series since that series started in 2014. The leading 3 players (4 in 2016) not already qualified, have received an entry to the Open. Before 2014 there was generally an exemption category so that the leading player or players, not already qualified, could play in the Open.

The Scottish Open became a Rolex Series event in 2017 (when the series was inaugurated), which meant the prize fund was increased to $7 million. Beginning in 2022, the tournament will be co-sanctioned by the PGA Tour and title sponsored by Genesis.

In the Scottish Open in 2019, hole 7―15 were used in front nine holes, and hole 1―6, 16―18 were used in back nine holes. In the Ladies Scottish Open, in 2019, hole 7―15 were used in front nine holes, and holes 1―6, 16―18 were used in back nine holes, while in 2020, holes 1―6, 16, 14, 15 were used in front nine holes, and hole 7―13, 17, 18 were used on the back nine.

The Barbasol Championship is a professional golf tournament in Kentucky on the PGA Tour; it debuted in 2015 as an alternate event to The Open Championship in Britain in July. The first three editions of the tournament were played in Alabama at the Grand National course of the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail in Opelika, northeast of Auburn. It was the first PGA Tour event played in Alabama since the PGA Championship in 1990.

In 2018, the tournament moved to Kentucky to the Keene Trace Golf Club in Nicholasville, south of Lexington, and was the first PGA Tour event (excluding majors) in the state in 59 years, since the Kentucky Derby Open in 1959. (Valhalla Golf Club near Louisville hosted the PGA Championship in 1996, 2000, and 2014.)

Like other alternate events, the winner of the Barbasol Championship does not earn an invitation to the Masters and point values are limited due to the weaker field (24 OWGR points and 300 FedEx Cup points compared to 100 OWGR points and 600 FedEx points for Open Championship winners). However, the winner still receives a two-year PGA Tour exemption and a trip to the PGA Championship.

In August 2021, it was announced that from 2022 onward, the event would become a co-sanctioned event with the European Tour, played the same week as an alternate event to the Genesis Scottish Open.

OUR PICKS
PATRICK CANTLAY 14/1

Looking like the best bet of the week here. Patrick’s form coming in is set for a very good last Major of the year. We feel this course will be better suited to his game and he had to go in.

His form coming in is as follows:

  • Genesis – 3RD
  • Arnold Palmer – 4TH
  • Players – 19TH
  • WGC Dell – 9TH
  • Masters – 14TH
  • Heritage – 3RD
  • Wells – 21ST
  • US PGA – 9TH
  • US Open – 14TH
  • Travelers – 4TH

WOW!!

How has he not won in 2023? It’s his time and this week could spark a winning run for him.

Not much else to say apart from he will be in all of my draft team picks this week.

ALEX SMALLEY 66/1

I feel this will be one of the hottest picks this week.

From what we have seen out in practice he looks good. Some of the stats we have picked up on to match the course fit here are:

  • SG – Approach to Green 0.45 28TH
  • GIR – 69.26% 13TH
  • Proximity – 35’9 16TH
  • Approaches from 100 yards – 26TH

In a very good run of form right now as well landing two top ten’s in his last three events. One to watch for sure here.

AARON RAI 70/1

Aaron looks to be another great little bet here this week.

Having played most of his golf on US soil this year and playing against some of the best players in the world week in week out, he will not feel out of place this week or next week so keep an eye on his performance this week as could be in our Open report as well.

He is coming in off the back of three straight cuts made at the RBC Canadian open where he showed some great form around the greens shooting rounds of 67-69-69-67 to close in a tie for third place.

Made the cut at the Travelers, and then at the Rocket Mortgage another top ten only a poor Sunday saw he drop the wrong way.

Plenty to like and after chatting to his caddy he said he wins soon that is for sure.

ONES ON THE SHORT LIST
MIN WOO LEE 35/1
LUCAS HERBERT 80/1
ALEX BJORK 100/1
NIKLAS NORGAARD 40/1

You might not to too aware of this young talented player from Denmark. We were with his group on Sunday at the British Masters a few weeks ago. He showed some nerves out there but held up well, he could have shot three or four shots better but still a good top ten place in the end.

Two time winner on the Nordic Golf League:

  • Race to Himmerland – 2019
  • Esbjerg – 2020

One thing that stood out for me was just how far this boy can hit it, he is a good 20 to 30 yards longer than the DP World Tour average. This will be a big factor around here and feel this type of course should also suit his game.  Solid around game looking to get that break through it could be a big ask to win on the PGA Tour but he is playing well and the field is a much weaker one.

Top 20 bet could also be a good one here.

JOSH TEATER 55/1

Had some great info from our team based on the Korn Ferry Tour. Josh has been on the radar for quite some time. This season he has only played one PGA Tour event at the Puerto Rico Open, he started slow that week but his weekend play was very good shooting two 69’s to finish in the top 30.

Can he win this thing? I am not 100% but his previous results here show he can get the job done, he has made the last four cuts here and should do the same this week.

We need him to come out of the traps early doors this week and feel he will be a contender come Sunday.

GRAYSON MURRAY 50/1

This is a player I just feel fits the bill here this week. Already a winner on the PGA Tour and it was here at the Barbasol back in 2017.

He is a risky bet but the odds I like this week and worth the punt. He misses a lot of cuts but the events and courses he likes he seems to always turn up and play well at. This will be one of those.

His last event was the John Deere Classic and what a week he had.

64-70-69-65 – 6TH Place

So we know he is a streaky player and the stats are against him due to the number of missed cuts, but if he starts strong we could be getting plenty of cash for the Open betting.

SOREN KJELDSEN 400/1

Keeping Soren in this week playing well. Could be a great top 20 bet here as well.
