THE BELFRY

THE BRABAZON COURSE

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.9.2″ _module_preset=”default” text_font=”|600|||||||” text_text_color=”#000000″]

PAR 72- YARDAGE 7255

The majestic fairways and carpet-smooth greens of The Brabazon form a world-famous stage on which some of golf’s most exhilarating dramas have played out. Its meticulous design involves tight fairways, perilous bunkers, lakes and fast undulating greens that have challenged some of golf’s greatest players.

With its well-positioned lakes, streams and bunkering, good course management is essential if you’re to score well here. It’s important to play for position off the tee, to consider the shape of each hole and the best side of the fairway to aim for.

Despite receiving a good deal of traffic, the layout is presented in great condition and the heavily sloping greens can become devilishly quick, demanding a silky touch.

There are many recognisable holes on the course but two of the most famous are: the short par-4 10th where the bold might attempt to drive over the ditch to the narrow green, in the style of Seve Ballesteros; and the testing 18th where water must be avoided on the left with the drive, then cleared with the second to find the putting surface.

It was here in the Ryder Cup of 1989 that Christy O’Connor Jnr fired a now legendary 2-iron in to three feet to beat Fred Couples.

Our first pick for the this week goes to Callum for me he is primed to get a win and back on UK soil could be the final piece of the jigsaw to nail his first European Tour victory.

Three times a winner on the Challenge Tour with his last win coming back in 2019 at the Made in Denmark where he jumped nearly 400 places in the world rankings.

His game will suit the Belfry and we have already spoke to him ahead of this week’s event and he can’t wait to get started this week. Of course coming of the back of a great week at the Canary Islands championship with a tied twelfth finish in the end will give him plenty of confidence this week.

I think at worst it will be another top ten for the young scot, but if he can get his nose ahead come Sunday then you never know.

I know it’s the third week we have played Mr Harding and for good reason. We caught up with him on Friday and he was not well all week to be fair, for him to even turn up and try and play shows the sort of person he is.

He owes us one and we told him that today and in his words he said I will not let you boys down this week wink wink. He loves playing in the UK and his third place in this event proves that from last year.

Not really much else to add apart from he is 100% fit this week and ready to go low, he even joked with us to say the course record could be in danger this week. Let’s hope so should be a good bet and the odds are a little better than last week for us.

You have to love Eddie and his very dry sense of humour. Talking about his golf and his overall game he did find something over the past few weeks in Tenerife which for the team shouts a good week coming very soon. Of course back on home soil and winner of this event back in 2018 in fact his results here are some of the best playing this week. Since 2015 he has gone:

33-22-MC-WIN-2-47

He has slipped down the world rankings since 2019 where he was a top fifty in the world player to now over two hundred in the world. In fact this was his last win on the European Tour so will be taking plenty of good vibes playing at this event.

We all could see his marked improvement last week and followed a lot of his golf over the weekend. Shooting a 65 on Sunday to close with a twelfth place was a nice week for him. I see plenty of the same here so watch this space as he could be rolling the clocks back this week.

Russell is trending in the right direction for us this week. Coming off the back of four straight missed cuts we saw that flip at the Valspar a couple of weeks ago and then carried that onto the Wells Fargo with another great top twenty finish.

With him it is all about feel and course set up and this place should suit his game and touch this week. He was sixteenth here in 2018 and made the cut again in 2019 so has shown he likes this set up over the past few years.

One of the best putters on the tour and a two time winner on the PGA Tour and he also won the Irish Open hosted by Rory back in 2018. I feel he is playing just as good now so feel it is the perfect time to bet him.

Berger owes us for 2021. Three times we have now played him he withdrew from the Honda so was a non-starter there then the other couple of times we backed him at low odds he missed the cut both times.

I feel this week he will make it up to us and should enjoy coming back here this week. He first played this event back in 2015 and seemed to enjoy the set up and lay out which saw him finish in the top ten. The last time he was here he also had a good week finishing inside the top twenty five.

I think one main factor for this has to be his strokes gained off the tee as well as his strokes gained approach to the green he is well up both of those leader boards on the PGA stats. If you also add in his stroke gained putting I am always so surprised he has not turned up for us before now.

He also heads the PGA Tour for par or better streak records tied with Cameron Tringale, beating the likes of Rahm and Xander.

I feel if he starts well this week he will make plenty of birdies and get us some of that cash back.

We are big fans of Peter and feel the whole way he has gone about mapping his career is so far has been very professional. He has gained experience on every tour and played all over the worth and has been close to winning three times on the European Tour. I actually backed him in a personal private bet at the MGM Resorts on the Korn Ferry Tour and he won so hoping he can do the same for us again this week.

I know it’s a big step up in fields but that will not faze him and to win on the Korn Ferry is hard enough to do so plenty of good reading ahead of this week.

I feel he is now ready to give the PGA Tour a good run for a win very soon. His best result in 2021 was a twenty second at the Corrales against a top class field, we got to see his Saturday round and in all honestly that could and should have been a 70 which would have given him a top ten for that week.

Might go for a top twenty bet here as well.
