COLONIAL CC

Colonial Country Club was started 85 years ago in 1936 by Marvin Leonard, who had a keen interest in bringing bent grass greens to his hometown of Fort Worth. When his initial plans to install bent grass greens at an already existing Fort Worth golf club failed, Leonard came up with his vision for Colonial Golf Club.

In the late 1930s, Leonard began talks with the United States Golf Association (USGA) to conduct the U.S. Open at Colonial. After guaranteeing the USGA $25,000, Colonial was granted the rights to the 1941 edition, won by Craig Wood the winner of that year’s Masters.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.9.2″ _module_preset=”default” text_font=”|600|||||||” text_text_color=”#000000″]

The golf course at Colonial Country Club was designed by John Bredemus of Texas and Perry Maxwell of Oklahoma. The par-70 course, currently at 7,209 yards, is bordered on the northern edge by the Trinity River (Clear Fork) with the rest of the course surrounded by the neighbouring residential area. The course length in 1941 was 7,035 yards, considerably long for the era.

In addition to the annual PGA Tour event, the course has hosted three major or significant professional golf events: the 1941 U.S. Open, the 1975 Tournament Players Championship (won by Al Geiberger), and the 1991 U.S. Women’s Open (won by Meg Mallon).

COLONIAL TOURNAMENT

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.9.2″ _module_preset=”default” text_font=”|600|||||||” text_text_color=”#000000″]

The Colonial golf tournament has been held every year since 1946, with exceptions in 1949 (flooding of the Trinity River) and 1975, when the club hosted the second Tournament Players Championship in August.

The most noteworthy winner of the tournament is Ben Hogan; the late Fort Worth resident won five times, which earned the course the nickname “Hogan’s Alley.” Other notable winners include Sam Snead, Arnold Palmer, Billy Casper (twice), Lee Trevino (twice), Ben Crenshaw (twice), Al Geiberger, Bruce Lietzke (twice), Jack Nicklaus, Peter Jacobsen, Lanny Wadkins, Ian Baker-Finch, Tom Lehman, Corey Pavin (twice), Tom Watson, Phil Mickelson (twice), Sergio García, Nick Price (twice), Kenny Perry (twice), Zach Johnson (twice), and Jordan Spieth.

The current tournament record is 259, set by Zach Johnson in 2010. Kenny Perry holds the 54-hole record of 192 which he shot in 2005. In 2011, David Toms set the 36-hole record with a 124. The 18-hole record of 61 is held by 6 players. The front nine and back nine records are both 28, held by Wayne Levi and Keith Clearwater, respectively.

From 2007 through 2015, the tournament was sponsored by Crowne Plaza Hotels and Resorts and called the “Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial.” Previous title sponsors include Southwestern Bell, MasterCard, and Bank of America. It became the “Dean & DeLuca Invitational” in 2016; Dean & DeLuca is a chain of upscale grocery stores headquartered in Wichita, Kansas. It became the “Fort Worth Invitational” in 2018.

The 2018 tournament, renamed the Fort Worth Invitational, was held through the support of four local corporate supporters that stepped in to provide financial support after Dean & DeLuca suddenly pulled-out of a six-year sponsorship agreement. American Airlines, AT&T, XTO Energy Inc. and Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway agreed to fund the 2018 tournament to allow time for the PGA Tour and Colonial Country Club to find a new sponsor.

Charles Schwab & Co., a major sponsor on the PGA Tour and PGA Champions Tour, expanded its golf presence in 2019 by assuming title sponsorship of the PGA Tour’s Fort Worth Invitational at Colonial Country Club, known henceforth as The Charles Schwab Challenge. The four-year agreement, from 2019-2022, was announced April 23, 2018 by representatives from Charles Schwab, the PGA Tour and Colonial Country Club, who were joined by defending champion Kevin Kisner.

Yet to win on the PGA Tour but everything for me is trending in the right direction for this week’s event and talk about a course fit for this talented young golfer from Mexico.

Some pointers that have us interested this week:

  • World number 19
  • SG Off the Tee .442
  • SG Tee to Green .920
  • SG Total 1.241

He is one of the straightest drivers of the ball on tour and ranks as high as second with 72.89% fairways hit, a mush around Colonial.

The greens around here are again very tricky and with him having a 36 feet proximity to the hole is another advantage so should keep those bogeys of his card. He is also mustard inside one hundred yards so watch out he could go very low this week.

This could be his week and not a bad price.

The team followed a lot of Gary’s play last week. We all just felt it was still too early for him to finish strong and he ended up shooting a 77 to close in a tie for 38TH place.

The game is there though and he is a quality golfer with plenty of wins under his belt. He has some good form of late as well:

  • 6TH Valero Texas Open
  • 5TH Wells Fargo

He has played this event twice way back in 2012 where he finished in 73 place, but he turned that around last year with a top ten here. I feel he has the chance to go low again this week, we should be able to tell after round one how he is feeling if he starts under par then we will have a great chance of value over the weekend.

I have player Sungjae twice in 2021 at the Arnold Palmer and the Dell Match play, he had a good week at the Arnold Palmer finishing in twenty first place with odds of 45/1.

After we caught up with him last week at the PGA he said he is so looking forward to playing back at Colonial, he has plenty of great memories from last year where he came very close to winning it.

He does blow hot and cold but he owes us a return this week and I feel it is on.

Horses for courses fit around here gaining nearly a shot strokes gained off the tee. Another key factor for us having walked this course is the landing areas are not that generous and with him driving the ball as straight as he has been its another box ticked for me.

A player that has made us a few pounds of the past couple of years. We shouted this kid back in January 2020 as the next best thing and he has not disappointed. If you remember our 2020 Masters picks we had him at 150/1 placed win as well as a top twenty bet win.

So am expecting a lot from him again this week.

Eight straight cuts made since the Arnold Palmer with some of his best results coming since then:

  • Arnold Palmer – 3RD
  • The Players – 7TH
  • Texas Open – 14TH
  • Masters – 8TH
  • RBC Heritage – 4TH
  • PGA Championship – 17TH

He pretty much has everything we are looking for this week to get the job done. Looked solid in practice and the putter is looking hot. Add to that he is 1.507 strokes gained total WOW

Should be bringing us home some Wonga this week.

The inaugural tournament was played from 14 to 17 August 2014 at the Himmerland Golf & Spa Resort, in Farso. Denmark. Himmerland hosted the event from 2014 to 2017. In 2015, the tournament featured the shortest par-3 hole in European Tour history, when the 16th hole played just 79 yards in the final round.

In 2018, Made in Denmark was played at Silkeborg Ry Golfklub, before returning to Himmerland Golf & Spa Resort in 2019. During the Made in Denmark Challenge in June 2018, the organisation behind the tournament announced that Made in Denmark would continue for another five years, until 2023.

With all these older guys picking up the wins over the past couple of years I am going with Richie to follow suit this week in Denmark.

His golf has been steady over 2021 so far and it has just been that odd shot or round that has cost him winning or finishing higher up on the leader boards.

We were out with him at the Tenerife Open and he is just loving the game right now and is so more relaxed and enjoying competing at this high level.

Scottish golf is flying high at the moment and it is thanks to players like Richie that has made an impact in the game for the youngsters coming through the ranks. So he has not won in six years but did anyone hear about a certain Blandy getting his first ET title after his 478TH start.

He also likes playing his golf at this venue and the course set up suits his eye. He has finished just outside the top ten here over the last two attempts here, so will be looking to improve on that this week.

This player has impressed us for a while now. In fact we were going to play him at the British Masters but did feel it was too early but we nearly got that wrong as he had a blinding week to finish in a tie for third.

He arrive in Demark last week so has been adjusting to this course and the various tee locations on almost every hole around here. With that in mind the winner here will have to be very adaptable to yardage changes every day.

It is only a matter of time when he picks up his first ET title, and from what we have seen from him this week he has been playing well around here hitting plenty of fairways and holing lots of putts.

It will be his first time here but when he played on the challenge tour a lot of the calendar were on similar courses. We saw him play at the D&D Real challenge where again he played well to manage a top five which has many aspects that relate to here for us.

NAP of the week for us.

His last five events read:

  • Kenya Classic – 7TH
  • Austrian Open – 7TH
  • Gran Canaria Open – 8TH
  • Tenerife Open – 33RD
  • British Masters – 11TH

How has he not yet won on the European Tour has surprised us all to be honest.

Even playing as well as he has done he has still drifted out of the top one hundred in the world rankings, he was as low as 78TH last year and see him getting back or even better by 2022.

We had trackman set up on a few different hole locations this week and the numbers we got back from Matthias was pretty great reading his dispersion rate with his irons were of the scale. I can see now why he is ranked 7TH on his greens in regulation stat at 72.22%.

Should start well and not look bad this week. He could in fact run away with the lead all going well.
