SOUDAL OPEN

The Belgian Open is a men’s golf tournament which has been played intermittently from 1910 to 2000. All editions since 1978 have been part of the European Tour. After not having been played since 2000, it returned in 2018 as the Belgian Knockout, hosted by Pieters Productions, along with its co-founder, Belgian professional golfer Thomas Pieters.

RINKVEN INTER

First conceived during the 70’s, Rinkven was finally definitely established in 1981 with its course at its present site – a wonderfully peaceful area of natural “Kempense” fenland just 15 km outside the city of Antwerp. A group of friends from the Jewish community was the driving force in forming the club and thus the inclusion of “International” in the name of the club which is open to all, regardless of country, creed or colour.

Renowned Belgian golfer and golf course architect Paul Rolin was responsible for the original design of the courses which developed in three stages over the years to its present 36 hole format. More recently the famous English architect Hawtree has made significant amendments to bring the two courses up to modern championship standards.

The two courses are a mixture of woodland and parkland holes with water coming in play on several holes. A variety of teeing positions provide a serious challenge to players at all levels. The North Course – at 6124m par 72 – is the longer of the two courses while the South Course – 5986m par 71- has a greater variety of holes requiring the use of all clubs in the bag.

The club regularly hosts tournaments for the DP World/European Tour including the “Belgian Knock-Out” in 2018 and 2019 and the “Soudal Open” in 2022, 2023 and 2024. Other important international events hosted by Rinkven include the European Amateur Championship, the Telenet Challenge Tour and various LETAS ladies tournaments. During such occasions the members rally round as volunteers to make the events memorable for all concerned, with the result that Rinkven is regularly called upon for its facilities.

THE CHARLES SCHWAB CHALLENGE

The Colonial National Invitation, titled for sponsorship reasons as the Charles Schwab Challenge since 2019, is a professional golf tournament in Texas on the PGA Tour, played annually in May in Fort Worth at Colonial Country Club.

The tournament is unofficially associated with Ben Hogan (1912–1997), the long-time Fort Worth resident who won the tournament five times, the most of any player. One of the top players in golf history, he won nine major titles, six after a near-fatal automobile collision in 1949 that kept him hospitalized for two months. Hogan’s final three major wins were consecutive in 1953; a statue of him at swing completion is near the clubhouse.

The Charles Schwab Challenge is one of only five tournaments given “invitational” status by the PGA Tour, and consequently it has a reduced field of approximately 120 players (as opposed to most full-field open tournaments with a field of 144 or 156 players). The other four tournaments with invitational status are the Genesis Open, Arnold Palmer Invitational, the RBC Heritage, and the Memorial Tournament. However, the 2020 event was staged with 144 players to help make up for the loss of several tournaments cancelled earlier in the year.

Invitational tournaments have smaller fields (between 120 and 132 players), and have more freedom than full-field open tournaments in determining which players are eligible to participate in their event, as invitational tournaments have slightly different criteria for player eligibility in the PGA Tour Priority Ranking System. Furthermore, unlike full-field open tournaments, invitational tournaments do not offer open qualifying (aka Monday qualifying).

COLONIAL COUNTRY CLUB

Colonial Country Club is a private golf club in the southern United States, located in Fort Worth, Texas. The club has hosted an annual PGA Tour event, the Colonial National Invitation, since 1946; it is the longest running non-major tour event to be held at the same venue.

The golf course at Colonial Country Club was designed by John Bredemus of Texas and Perry Maxwell of Oklahoma. The par-70 course, currently at 7,209 yards, is bordered on the northern edge by the Trinity River (Clear Fork) with the rest of the course surrounded by the neighbouring residential area. The course length in 1941 was 7,035 yards considerably long for the era.

In addition to the annual PGA Tour event, the course has hosted three major or significant professional golf events: the 1941 U.S. Open, the 1975 Tournament Players Championship (won by Al Geiberger), and the 1991 U.S. Women’s Open (won by Meg Mallon).

OUR PICKS
GUIDO MIGLIOZZI 45/1

First up is this very talented Italian. He hits form then goes missed cuts we think we might have got him on a good run for this week’s action.

We followed him at his last event in China at the start of May, he played very well that week just getting pipped by the one shot by Otaegui.

Not much has really changed regarding his overall game just still very inconsistent, this probably explains the reason we have got such good odds.

One to watch if he starts low watch out.

RICHIE RAMSAY 80/1

I think Richie should have had so many more wins under his belt. It is still a good record with him winning four DP World Tour events but could be more like ten.

It has been just under two years now since his last win at the Cazoo Classic shooting four rounds in the sixties. His win before that was back in 2015, so a seven year wait.

His game sets up well for around this course and from what we have seen with him getting there earlier than most he is looking like a very relaxed player and could be a danger man.

K APHIBARNRAT 50/1

Well he is back. For those of you that have followed my tips for a few years, you will know when I back “Asia’s John Daly” he normally turns up for us.

He was so close to landing the win for us at the BMW Wentworth back in 2021 at 250/1 we got done by Billy that week but it was still a great payday picking up over £250 for the place.

We have a lot of our team based in Thailand and we have been coving his recent form and tracking him for over a year. Like what we have seen and feel at this price he is well worth a punt here.

OTHERS ON THE SHORT LIST
ZANDER LOMBARD 45/1

In form coming in likes this course and fits well.

AARON COCKERILL 80/1

Been with his coach and the game is coming together. The hard work could get him close to that winning line here.

TONY FINAU 30/1

I am throwing big Tony back in the mix for this week’s event.

With six wins under his belt and playing some of his best ever golf he looks ready to land number seven real soon.

Stats needed to perform well here he ticks all the boxes:

  • Total Driving – 23RD PGA
  • SG – App to the Green – 4TH PGA
  • SG Total – 28TH PGA
  • Birdie Avg – 14TH

The team had him short listed for the Houston Open this year but we left him out, he had a solid week finishing runner up to Jaeger.

Reckon he could take the lead here early rounds and pull away from the field if his putting boots are on.

BRIAN HARMAN 33/1

That waggle is taking for ever J Even though this guy is so annoying and painful to watch because of his slow play we will have to get over it this week.

With his last win being the Open last year he has come close at a few places since then.

He started 2024 with a great run at the Sentry shooting a great final day 64 to give him a chance of winning that week but still managed a decent top five. Couple of months later at the Players he managed a runners up spot so we think this week it could be the win.

Ticks all the boxes he looks good and the way he plays if he is in the final pairing come Sunday he will be tough to play against with that slow play.

C BEZUIDENHOUT 50/1

Our last big win with Bez was in 2019 he was just breaking onto the scene then but our team had been tracking him for quite some time. He landed us the win at the Andalucia Masters at 80/1 returning us just shy of £500.

He has managed to land us a few place returns since then, he has got another win since then at the Alfred Dunhill and more recently interested us was his runner up place at this year’s PGA Tour event at the American Express, he finished ahead of some of the world’s best players that week.

Putting this week will be top of the tree and no better player right now than him on these greens watch out he could be break the record books very soon.

OTHERS ON THE SHORT LIST
THOMAS DETRY 60/1

Saw so many positives at last week’s Major. Normally carries on form so one to back again the following week.

HARRIS ENGLISH 33/1

Having a great 2024. Horses for courses player. Trackman set up on him live on course and short game area and we all like the numbers we are seeing. Watch out he could catch FIRE this week and  the field could be in trouble.
