CORALES CHAMPIONSHIP
JONSSON WORKWEAR OPEN
The Corales Puntacana Championship is a golf tournament in the Dominican Republic on the PGA Tour, formerly on the Web.com Tour. It was first played in 2016 at the Puntacana Resort and Club, on the east coast in the La Altagracia province.
After two years as a Web.com Tour event, it transitioned to a PGA Tour alternate event (opposite the WGC Match Play in Texas), starting in March 2018. The first PGA Tour event held in the Dominican Republic, it is similar in rewards to other alternate events: 300 FedEx Cup points for the winner, a two-year tour exemption, 24 OWGR points, but no invitation to the Masters Tournament.
The inaugural event in 2016 was held in early June, then moved to early May in 2017.
Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 tournament was postponed until September when it was part of the 2020–21 PGA Tour season. It was also elevated to full FedEx Cup point event status, with the winner receiving a 2021 Masters Tournament invitation.
CORALES GOLF CLUB
Designed by Tom Fazio and opened in 2010, Corales is an exclusive and dramatic 18-hole course with six Caribbean Oceanside holes. Designed along the natural cliffs, bays, ocean coves and the inland lakes and coralina quarries, Corales Golf Course rates among the World’s finest Golf Experiences. The exhilarating challenge culminates playing the Devil’s Elbow, Corales’s last three holes. The Devil’s Elbow features the striking eighteenth hole with a dramatic forced carry over the cliff lined Bay of Corales, an inspired capstone to a memorable and breath-taking golf experience.
UNSIDE THE ROPES FACTS

The Jonsson Workwear Open is a professional golf tournament held at The Club at Steyn City, in Midrand, South Africa. It is currently played on the European Tour and Sunshine Tour as a co-sanctioned event, having previously been played on the Challenge Tour.
The tournament was inaugurated in 2022 as a co-sanctioned event between the Sunshine Tour and Challenge Tour. J. C. Ritchie won the event, shooting 26-under-par, beating Christopher Mivis by six shots.
The 2023 event was scheduled as a co-sanctioned European Tour and Sunshine Tour event, played at The Club at Steyn City, the same venue in which the 2022 Steyn City Championship was played at.
STEYN CITY GC
The Steyn City 18 hole Nicklaus design championship course is looped, with a challenging design, wide, immaculate fairways, changes in elevation and beautiful views. It’s no wonder that Thomas Abt, commissioner of the Sunshine Tour, described it as South Africa’s answer to Augusta.
The championship golf course has become a magnet for keen golfers from all over the world.
The course presents 75 bunkers and several water features lining the generously wide, immaculate fairways. Winter-hardy grasses on the greens, tees, fairways and roughs guarantee a green surface, all year round. A looped course with changes in elevation, holes nine and 18 converge at the Clubhouse.

OUR PICKS
JOEL DAHMEN 21/1 WIN BET
First up this week and should be a good under the radar pick will be Joel Dahmen.
We were with his team at the back end of 2022, he was playing well went third at the Mayakoba then the following week another top ten at the Houston Open and went close to the win at the RSM Classic.
He does not do much practice over the festive season so always takes him time to warn up again at the start of a new year. His last event being in November 2022 and his first event back in 2023 was In fact the AT&T Pebble, when you think most of the players have already played another four events at least. So I will forgive his two missed cuts at the Genesis and the Arnold Palmer two pretty tough courses and when you’re not ready it’s hard to complete at that level.
But we have liked what we have seen at the Players and the Valspar two cuts made and coming to an easier track I love his chances. He holds a dam good record here as well, previous winner of the event so knows how to get the job done.
Our pick of the week!!! Top ten bets could also do well here.
WYNDHAM CLARK 12/1 WIN BET
Next player on the teams radar for this course fit is Mr Clark.
Yet to break through and get that win on the PGA Tour. His best chance came against Brian Gay at the Bermuda Championship in 2021 when he made the play-off but just lost out.
The team where with his group at two events this year already once at the WM Phoenix Open and again at the Players, plenty to like and his caddy had plenty of good words to say with his upcoming year ahead.
You can already see this in his performances this season:
- 14 Events played 12 cuts made
- 3 Top ten’s
- 5 Top 25’s
- SG Total .928
- SG Tee to Green .864
- Increased club head speed to 123.45 ranked 6th PGA Tour
We all feel he makes a great case to be in contention here this week and should be a great shout come Sunday evening.
SEAN O'HAIR 90/1
As you know with certain players they trend on certain golf course and look to fit well on tracks year on year.
This course seems to me to be a horse for courses fit for Sean.
He is having a very mixed bag this season four cuts made and three missed. But from the team told me this week I am very positive about his chances here.
We followed his last round on the back nine at the Valspar inside the ropes and saw plenty of good vibes. He is a four time winner on the PGA Tour and feel this week he could make that win number five.
His stats are pretty average which is to be understandable due to the missed cuts. But from what we have seen in practice here he is looking good.
OTHERS SHORT LISTED
CAMERON PERCY 50/1
CODY GRIBBLE 80/1
DALE WHITNELL 40/1
Our first pick goes to the KPMG Challenge Tour winner Mr Dale Whitnell.
We have followed his career with a lot of interest over the past few years, we caddied for Dale at a few challenge tour events and did expect to see more from this talented kid.
He is now starting to fit in on the DP World Tour and we feel will win one very soon. Here are some of his closest chances so far on the Tour:
- 4TH – Mallorca 2022
- 6TH – Joburg Open 2022
- 9TH – Thailand Classic 2023
Last week he again impressed us at the SDC Championship. The game is tuned in and he just needs that one week when the putt’s drop and from what we have seen of him here already he might just well do that.
GAVIN GREEN 50/1
There is plenty to like about Gavin’s game right now and something you might not know.
He played a lot of golf with Kurt Kitayama who we have also tipped up over the years and we said it would only be a matter of time before he wins a big event and he has now accomplished that at the Arnold Palmer this year.
Green is that sort of mould of player, he just needs that first win on the DP World Tour and the flood gates with open for him.
He had a great chance to do just that last year at the D+D Czech Masters and also the Portugal Masters the same year.
I know Kurt has been speaking to him and they both have had some good banter over the years so I think Green will now up his game this season and aim to push to play more PGA Tour events.
MATTHIEU PAVON 33/1
Here is our NAP for this week’s event.
How has he not won yet on the DP World Tour? That is the question I put to his caddy at the start of the year when I saw him at the Hero Desert Classic. He said it has mainly been out of his hands when he has been in contention, someone has turned up on the Sunday and blitzed it. But he said it will come soon and when I asked his best chances this course and event was top of the tree.
Course trends he fits everything suited to play well here.
He is playing some of his best golf, just hope the bookies don’t notice this too much:
- Ras Al – 9TH
- Singapore – 6TH
- SDC – 8TH
