The FedEx St. Jude Championship, founded as the Westchester Classic in 1967, is a professional golf tournament on the PGA Tour. Since 2007, it has been played as the first tournament of the playoff system for the FedEx Cup, with the field limited to the top 125 players on the FedEx Cup points list at the end of the regular season. For sponsorship reasons, the tournament has previously been titled as The Northern Trust, The Barclays, and the Buick Classic.

The Westchester Classic was hosted at Westchester Country Club in Harrison, New York until 2007, after which it moved around several courses in New York and New Jersey. In 2018, the PGA Tour announced that The Northern Trust, as it was then known, would alternate between the New York/New Jersey and Boston areas from 2019, and in 2020 it was held at TPC Boston. For the 2021–22 season, the tournament was relocated to TPC Southwind in Memphis, Tennessee with FedEx as the new title sponsor and the event being titled the FedEx St. Jude Championship.

The course length for the first PGA Tour event was 7,006 yards (6,406 m) in 1989, and has played at 7,244 yards (6,624 m) since 2005, except in 2007 and 2008, when it was five yards shorter. With 94 bunkers and ten water hazards, TPC Southwind was ranked ninth in difficulty out of 51 courses on the PGA Tour in 2011. Hole #14 at 239 yards (219 m) consistently ranks as one of the toughest par 3’s on the PGA Tour.

The course grass is Bermuda for the greens and rough, with Zoysia on the tees and fairways. Prior to 2005, the greens were bent grass.

FACTS FROM OUR TEAM LIVE ON COURSE

8 par 4’s over 450 yards

Holes 11 to 18 all feature water hazards

Proximity to hole a big factor, small greens.

Even hitting the Zoysia fairways here does not guarantee a pure strike, we noticed a few flyers last week when we played here, so will have to expect the unexpected and grind out rounds here

Greens in Regulation needs to be a high percentage

OUR PICKS
WYNDHAM CLARK 33/1

Hot of the press our US Open 80/1 winner is on our short list again for this week.

He has been playing well since then making the cuts in all of the following events he has played in.

  • US Open – WINNER
  • Travelers – 29TH
  • Scottish Open – 25TH
  • The Open – 33RD

Looking for birdie machines this week and he is top of the pile. Ticks all of the boxes needed to shoot low here.

His strokes gained total is around 1.382 combined with his distance of the tee we could again be celebrating this Sunday with another winner, not sure we will get those 80/1 we got at the US Open but will take.

ANDREW PUTNAM 125/1

We were with Andrew’s team last week and they seemed very happy with his game and feel his next win will come very soon.

This course could be just the ticket over the past five years here he has had two top five’s and a top 25.

After chatting to our team based in the US it was clear that we had to look at similar tracks and set ups to get the best value players for the week. So based on East Lake/AT&T Byron and TPC Craig Ranch he was pretty much top of the tree.

He is also one of the best putters on the PGA Tour ranks 10TH strokes gained putting.

NAP for us this week.

CAMERON YOUNG 40/1

Cameron has been a good bet for us in the past and always gives us a good profit when we feature him.

This week could be one of his best chances to finally get his first PGA Tour win. This course demands respect and it helps if you have played it before and he has he played well last year here finishing just outside the top 30.

His best feature has to be the driver and boy what distance can he get the ball from the tee.

  • Driving Distance – 3RD
  • Strokes gained of the Tee – 0.594 – 11TH PGA
  • Total Driving – 22ND PGA
  • Birdie Average – 4TH PGA

He might not be in everyone’s line up this week and could be going under the radar with the bookies, this is why I like him this week, I would have liked to see around 60’s but will take 40’s.

KEEGAN BRADLEY 66/1

Winner back in June at the Travelers he has been playing some of his best golf this season.

Winner at the ZOZO with rounds of 66-65-66-68, runner up at the Farmers. Top ten at the Arnold Palmer and then of course landing his sixth win on the PGA at the Travelers.

His putter has gone off the boil over the past two events but that will surly change soon. I feel he goes low here this week and could be number seven for his wins on the PGA Tour.

One thing you will need to be around here is a positive total driving efficiency, I think he covers this quite well ranking second on the PGA Tour. Another stat the guys on course pointed out that will also be a factor here this week will be par four scoring where again he looks pretty impressive ranking 22ND on the PGA Tour for par four scoring at 3.99.

He also has some good distance with his driver so again yet another positive for me.

One to watch!!
