THE WANAMAKER TROPHY

Named after businessman and golfer Rodman Wanamaker, stands nearly 2.5 feet (75 cm) tall and weighs 27 pounds (12 kg). The trophy was lost, briefly, for a few years until it showed up in 1930 in the cellar of L.A. Young and Company. Ironically, this cellar was in the factory which made the clubs for the man responsible for losing it, Walter Hagen. Hagen claimed to have trusted a taxi driver with the precious cargo, but it never returned to his hotel. There is a smaller replica trophy that the champion gets to keep permanently, but the original must be returned for the following years tournament

SOUTHERN HILLS COUNTRY CLUB

The Southern Hills Country Club was founded way back in 1936 and it makes for an old-school golfing resort, private and member owned, sitting on a beautiful piece of property in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The Southern Hills Country Club is best known in the United States for its golf courses which are consistently ranked high, among the top one hundred best in the world and it hosted fifteen major championships in the last sixty years. The Southern Hills Country Club features 27 holes of golf, but the main attraction is the Championship Course, which was designed by the famous architect Perry Maxwell . It has hosted seven major championships, including the 1946 USGA Women’s Amateur or more recently, the 2009 USGA Amateur Championship where our good friend Byeong-Hun An won. The West Nine is the second course at the Southern Hills Country Club, being built in 1992 and designed by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw.

These two golf courses are among the toughest to play in the lower 48 states. Perry Maxwell designed the main course at Southern Hills Country Club in a minimalist fashion, making for this golfing resort a true gem and a must-play in this life time, provided you manage to get an invitation. The championship course features 7131 yards of golf from its longest tees for a 70 par and it makes for a supreme challenge for the average Joe and golf pros alike, as it will require you to utilize all the clubs in your golf-bag. The design/layout is classic, featuring rolling hills and tree lined fairways, with a little creek meandering the property. There are also a few water-hazards coming into play on the back 9 but they present no significant problem.

The world number 47 pegs it up here this week in a great run of form. I can see why his odds are so high depending on his swing from week to week and has plenty of missed cuts. He missed last week at the AT&T Byron and I like that play he has been here early preparing his game for this beast of a course.

The team like what they have seen so far with him this week and he is flushing his irons, this backs up his strokes gained approach this season even with the amount of missed cuts he still ranks inside the top thirty on the PGA Tour. Another big factor for us was his marked improvement on the greens over the past five events. It works out around a shot gained on the field per round which is all smiles for us.

Last few results also prove his overall game is in good nick, and should be on for a great week here and a great place chances.

Another player with some great odds coming in here this week. Making the cut last week at the AT&T was the only down side for us not getting an even bigger price here to be fair.

We were with him at the Masters back in March and he showed us just how he can hold his nerve within a major setting, so feel this is now the right time to back him for a great chance to win here this week. The course is set up so well for him and he fits this place so well. He should make the cut here and if he putts the way he did in Mexico he could hold the lead here at some point over the weekend.

As we know that distance around here will again be one of the main factors and we are on the number one player on the PGA Tour who leads the driving distance with an average of 323.5 ranked 1st.

Could be a great bet for us. Watch this space.

Jason seems to be slowly finding his form this year and has been finding his groove over the past few events.

He came close to getting another win at the Farmers Insurance but just came up a few short.

He was another player we had in one of our groups at the AT&T Pebble and his short game was on point that week and the old Day looked back. His par four scoring that week was also epic on a tough course similar to here so should be holding his own against the field if that short game carry’s on.

With 12 PGA Tour victories under his belt and a previous winner of this event winning the USPGA back in 2015. He could be rolling back the years here and at this price am loving his chances. He has made the cut here nine times in a row so looking to make this the magic ten.

Previous nine: 8TH – 15TH – WINNER – 2ND – 19TH – 23RD – 4TH – 44TH

Ryan could be a surprise package for everyone in the golfing world this week and feel he could be featuring at the top end of the leader board most of the week here.

Form is key coming into a Major no matter what player you are and let’s take a look at his previous few results since winning the Ras Al Classic.

  • ISPS Handa – 15TH
  • Catalunya – 9TH
  • British Masters – 8TH
  • Soudal Open – 2ND

Pretty impressive I think you would agreee. OK so the PGA Tour and playing a Major is a big step up but winning and getting over the line has been a massive step forward for him this year.

Big hitter and ranks up there with the best off the tee this week and will be making those par fives look easy to reach and could be setting up plenty of birdies.

One to watch I would also like a top 20 bet here to cover your stake.

The World number twenty one at odds over 80/1 WOW!!!!

We caught up with Abraham last week here at Southern Hills as he missed the AT&T Bryon. Plenty too like and boy was he hitting it well in practice.

Not the longest off the tee so maybe this is why the odds have crept up here this week as distance could be a main factor but I just like the way he is hitting it and for the sake of a few yards with the driver 292 average is still not bad, and with an driving accuracy of 70% he will still be giving himself plenty of chances around here that is for sure.

He had a poor Masters but feel again his game does not really suit Augusta so was not that surprised he missed the cut this year.

He has also now gained enough experience in playing in majors that he should now have a great chance to win one. If the putter is on then he should be a contender.

Defo one to watch. Normally a fast starter so watch for FRL here as well.

I tipped up Gary at the Valero Texas Open this year and he gave us a great run ended up returning us a good place in the end at 33/1.

US Open champion in 2019 so knows how to get the job done on the big stage and on a tough golf course. He has had two top ten’s in his last four starts on the US PGA Championship so not a bad return as most bookies pay top ten in the Majors. So a good value bet with these odds here this week.

He is yet another player who has been here a week already and fine tuning his game.

Ranked inside the top twenty for driving distance on the PGA Tour is one of his highlights in getting my vote over a few others here this week. With nine eagles already this season could be a massive difference come Sunday evening if he has his putting boots on.

What is trending at the moment for Gary?

  • Greens in Regulation – Back to where he was at the start of the season where he had plenty of great results nearing 70%
  • Ball Striking – It’s pretty much there he was ranked 5th at the Honda and then another great iron stat at the Texas Open. He is ready to put it all together here.

Could be rolling back the years here this week, and major number two could be on the cards.

Jason owes us a good return in a Major. The team liked what they saw at the AT&T Byron last week.

In fact we can go back to the RBC Heritage the team did say then he was hitting some form which they were right in pointing out as he managed a good top twenty at that  event.

Known as a scrapper and can really grind out results even when he is not hitting fairways, that puts him in for me this week. I was with him at the Masters this year and there were not many players better at driving the ball that week. I believe he loves to challenge himself and likes being out of position every now and then to get him focused on the job in hand.

Already a winner this season at the Hewlett Packard Houston Open and a three time winner on the PGA Tour he could be adding a Major to that this year and this place could be the venue for him to do it.

Sam was on the maybe list for the week. He won the Valspar then goes missed cut at the Masters and then again at the AT&T Byron last week. I feel this as a positive for us as meant he has been here early and we have seen plenty to like.

After winning an event it is hard to get yourself focused and back in the game what with everything that comes with a win. He has now won three times on the PGA Tour and the next target has to be a major win.

Having not been around that long his major appearances have been not the best reading since 2016 he managed a top thirty at the US PGA in 2019 and that has been his best result so far.

I can see him improving on that this week and feel again it will only be a matter of time before he tastes a Major win.

Horses for Courses fit around here from what we have seen in practice:

  • Driving Distance – 307 – 34TH Ranked
  • GIR – 70.50% – 11TH Ranked
  • Birdie Average – 4.62 – 6TH Ranked
  • 3 Putt Avoidance – 1.85% – 16TH Ranked
  • Consecutive GIR Streak – 26 Hit – 5TH Ranked

Could be a great front runner watch this space.

Just how much talent has this kid got. Let’s go back to his missed cut in 2022 at the American Express. Since then what a run of form he has shown. Two top ten’s three top twenties having made the cut consecutively nine times.

Playing mostly on the PGA Tour now and challenging the top players in the world week in week out. It’s only a matter of time before he gets his first PGA Tour title I am sure of it.

He has built quite a major career already and coming in this week under the radar with the bookies that is for sure.

His last Major appearance was at the US OPEN 2021 where again he did not disappoint with a fantastic tied 17TH that week.

Plenty to like and also would be looking for a top twenty bet here.

What a player and what a record in the majors over the years. He will be on plenty of betting slips and draft picks this week he went in ahead of Rickie Fowler for me this week. He should get us a better value if he makes the cut.

With ten PGA Tour victories under his belt and hitting some form of late he looks to be hitting the form we are used to seeing. We were with his group over the weekend at the Farmers and had a great couple of afternoons chatting with both himself and his caddie. We have been involved with some of his work for the Rose Ladies Series.

We also picked his brains re his Major chances this year and the USPGA and the Open were top of his list. He said he never really likes the set up at the Masters and feels it’s hard for him to score around there. But feels the tougher the track it makes him focus more. I believe this test will be to his liking and should have a great week.

You know we love our big prices. This guy is a great each way shout and at 500/1 plenty to be shouting about if he turns up this week.

As you know we have scouts everywhere around the world so it was no surprise when he turned up to play at the Puerto Rico Open this season on the PGA Tour and had an amazing week with a top twenty finish against the world’s best players. He has been a world top one hundred player now for over a year so the results have been steady he won on the Japanese Tour at the Dunlop Phoenix last year so knows how to get the job done.

He is sneaky long which will be an advantage here of course and we set up trackman with him at a few holes this week to see just how far he can get it out there, we clocked quite a few drives at over 340 yards and straight.

Can he win it? Not that sure but could be a great place bet and maybe look at top 30 or top 20?
