The Sony Open

The Sony Open in Hawaii is a professional golf tournament on the PGA Tour, and is part of the tour’s FedEx Cup Series. It has been contested at the Waialae Country Club in Honolulu, Hawaii, since the event’s modern-day inception as the Hawaiian Open in November 1965.

In addition to the usual PGA Tour eligibility criteria, the Sony Open may invite up to three professional golfers from emerging markets.

Preparations for the 2018 Sony Open were briefly disrupted by a false emergency alert stating that a ballistic missile had been launched toward Hawaii. Staff members reportedly attempted to take shelter in the players’ locker room, the media centre was ordered to evacuate, and several players posted messages on social media about the erroneous alert, which was sent to all smartphones in the state.

The alert was ultimately determined to have been sent in error. Before the final round, Golf Channel cameramen also staged a walkout.

Waialae Country Club

Waialae Country Club is a private country club in East Honolulu, Hawaii. Founded 95 years ago in 1927 and designed by Seth Raynor, it is a par 72 championship course at 7,125 yards (6,515 m) from the Championship tees. From the Members tees at 6,456 yards (5,903 m), the course rating is 71.8 with a slope rating of 136.

The Waialae golf course hosts the Sony Open in Hawaii on the PGA Tour in January, the first full-field event of the calendar year. The event has had several corporate sponsors since its founding in 1965 as the Hawaiian Open.

The par three 13th is designed from one on the Biarritz Course in France.

Waialae’s 8th hole is patterned after the famous Redan hole on the North Berwick Golf Club in Scotland.

The special 16th hole is similar to the 6th hole of the National Golf Links of America at Southampton, Long Island.

The 10th Hole introduces features of the 17th or Road hole at St. Andrews in Scotland.

OUR PICKS

J T POSTON 35/1

A recent winner at the Shriners and since then has been playing well. So he was in some great form to close 2024.

We caught up with him and his team the following week after his win, at the RSM Classic. They did not really want the Xmas break to come as they were so positive another win was coming.

With this course set up and the way he is playing right now we should see him near the top of the leaderboard.

Watch out field !!!

CHRIS KIRK 50/1

Looking to pick up his seventh PGA Tour win here and feel he has one of the best chances around this type of odds on the market.

He had a very quiet 2024 compared to other years, it started so well winning the first event of the year at the Sentry then followed that with a top twenty at the Sony Open.

Stats he covers better than most playing this week are: SG Off the Tee – Driving Accuracy – Putts Per Round – Par 4 Scoring

Great bet and even better odds.

NICK TAYLOR 100/1

Next up we have Nick who might seem like a strange pick regarding form. We know otherwise he had a very slow sluggish start at the Sentry shooting two 73’s in rounds one and two. He then joined the party with a weekend shooting 66-69 which saw him climb up the leader board.

Over the break since his missed cut at the Bermuda champs we know the work he has been putting in and from what we saw at the weekend just gone he is ready to win.

I feel he will win soon in 2025 and this course could be just the ticket.

DAVID LIPSKY 200/1

David is part of our team having met him most weeks whilst he played on the European Tour over the years. He has now based his main focus on the PGA Tour and I do not blame him.

Of course, it will take time and he started 2024 will plenty of missed cuts which was to be expected. He has established himself well and has been close to picking up that win on US soil:

Charles Schwab – 9TH
Procore – 2ND
WWT – 6TH
Bermuda – 9TH

I feel this course and set up and from what we have seen of him this week he is looking good.

OTHERS ON OUR REPORTS

LUCAS GLOVER 90/1

He’s just a golfer who fits the bill to shoot low here this week, one for the big backers. It’s unbelievable he was this high in the odds, so I’m having some of that for sure.

TOM HOGE 60/1

Going to stay with Hoge he only just missed out on bagging us a big win last week so you never know.
