THE PLAYERS CHAMPIONSHIP

NEW EVENT ON THE DP TOUR

The Players Championship (commonly known as simply The Players, stylized by the PGA Tour as The PLAYERS Championship) is an annual golf tournament on the PGA Tour. Originally known as the Tournament Players Championship, it began in 1974. The Players Championship currently offers the highest prize fund of any tournament in golf ($20 million), overtaking the U.S. Open, which offers a $12.5 million purse. The field usually includes the top 50 players in the world rankings, but unlike the major championships and World Golf Championships events, it is owned by the PGA Tour and not an official event on other tours.

Despite not being a major, it is has been promoted as such by the tour, dubbed the fifth major, and is often regarded as the next most prestigious tournament in golf. This is because of the characteristics it shares with the majors, such as the high class field and its large purse. It also has a renowned host course in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida (the TPC at Sawgrass Stadium Course at which the tournament has been played since 1982, home of the iconic par-3 No. 17 “Island Green”)

TPC SAWGRASS

The TPC at Sawgrass is situated in Ponte Vedra Beach’s Sawgrass development. It has two individual courses, the Stadium Course and the Valley Course. The Stadium Course was designed by noted golf course architects Pete and Alice Dye, and is known as one of the most difficult golf courses in the world. Constructed specifically to host The Players Championship, it employs a distinctive “stadium” concept: like in other sports, fans at the TPC sit in “stands” made of raised mounds of grass. It is known for its signature hole, the par-3, 137-yard (125 m) 17th, known as the “Island Green,” one of golf’s most recognizable and difficult holes.

PECANWOOD GOLF CLUB

Pecanwood Golf and Country Club is a legend of South African golf and one of five Jack Nicklaus designed signature courses in the country. Situated on the banks of the Hartbeespoort Dam this course has been carefully crafted to test your skills to the full.

The fairways are generous and inviting and the Crenshaw bent grass greens are immaculate all year round. Although the course is flat, there are high mounds, carefully crafted water features and strategically placed bunkers that have been set amid the scenic mountain surrounds and vast expanses of water to create a challenging and interesting golf experience. The signature hole is the beautiful par 3, 13th hole that plays alongside the dam to a green flanked on both sides by bunkers.

OUR PICKS

SI WOO KIM 90/1

Loving this bet here this week with Kim. He loves the Florida swing and has improved year on year at the Masters so this week gears him up for this. I would even have a few pounds on him now for the Masters before this week starts as I could be cut in from 100/1.

What do we like? Strokes gained off the tee is over half a shot on the field average so far this season.

His last two events the putter has been poor and well below average he normally takes time to adjust to the faster type greens but he will this week and could see him matching his putting stats from the American Express where he was nearly two shots better per round.

I think for a world top fifty player the odds this week are very fair so watch this space folks.

IAN POULTER 150/1

Ian’s last win was back in 2018 at the Houston Open on the PGA Tour. He has had a rough few years with not really being in contention week on week since then and even his last win on the European Tour was the Volvo Match Play in 2011.

Can he win here? I think it’s a good each way bet or even a top twenty. The player reports I have had back from the team live at Sawgrass suggests his overall game is ready and the putter started to play ball last week.

BET365 have him at 150/1 paying 8 places with most of the rest going 80’s seems strange. I will be   snapping BET365 fingers off at that price this week well worth that money.

SERGIO GARCIA 80/1

The 2017 Masters champion priced at 80/1 this week got the team saying YES.

In fact his last win was that Masters in 2017 he has also won this event back in 2008. Experience around Augusta and Sawgrass is a must as we know and I feel he turns up this week and gets the job done.

The game is good nick, made the cut in every event he has played in so far in 2022.

Growing up in Spain on some of the fastest greens on the planet this Florida swing is right up his alley.

Stokes Gained Putting:

  • The Genesis – .450
  • Arnold Palmer – 1.288
  • The Players?

Everything seems to be trending in the right direction for all of us and this could be the break through week he needs to get another Major under his belt this year.

ADAM SCOTT 55/1

We tipped Adam at the Genesis 40/1 he got us a good place return finishing in fourth place that week. He owes us a win and feel the way he is playing he could get us money everytime we back him of late.

Few facts the team pointed out were, his sand saves last week were impressive on a difficult course same he was around 42% compared to 20% at the Genesis. His distance putting was also some of the best in the field in greens that fast is another big plus for us so should limit the three putts.

We had a chat to his caddie after this week’s event and the driver is back in the bag you will be glad to hear. If you didn’t know he chose not to use a driver at the Arnold which I think was a mistake.

He has been booming drives on track man this week so should be a massive plus for us.

ZANDER LOMBARD 66/1

Zander is a very good friend of ours and we caught up with him over the weekend in Kenya working hard on his game after missing the cut.

Yet to bag a win on the newly formed DP World Tour but has been knocking on that door a lot lately, he was the runner up at the Rocco Open in 2017 and was so unlucky not to win that week.

The boys were also with him at the Bain’s Whisky Cape Town Open where he had an epic week closing in a tie for third place in the end. Like I said plenty to like here we have got a better price because of his missed cut so will be taking full advantage watch this space.

KEENAN DAVIDSE 250/1

This guy is a special talent and we will see plenty of him in the near future I am sure of it. Coming into this week in a hot run of form from the Sunshine Tour here are his 2022 results so far:

  • Dimension Data Pro-Am – 42ND
  • Bain’s Cape Town Open – 29TH
  • Jonsson Workwear Open – 4TH
  • Mangaung Open – 6TH

So two top ten’s in his last two outings. OK this will be a much harder test against a much higher quality field but he does love his golf in SA, so do not be surprised to see him at the top of the leader board come the weekend.
