THE TRAVELERS CHAMPIONSHIP

The Travelers Championship is a professional golf tournament on the PGA Tour in Cromwell, Connecticut, a suburb south of Hartford. Since 1984 the tournament has been held at TPC River Highlands. It is managed by The Greater Hartford Community Foundation. In 2018 the Travelers Championship earned the Players Choice Award for the second consecutive year, which is voted on by PGA Tour members for its services, hospitality, attendance and quality of the course.

TPC RIVER HIGHLANDS

TPC River Highlands is a private golf club located in Cromwell, Connecticut, a suburb south of Hartford. It is part of the Tournament Players Club network operated by the PGA Tour. Since 1984, it has been the venue for the tour’s annual Travelers Championship, previously known as the Buick Championship and Greater Hartford Open.

The club was founded in 1928 as Middletown Golf Club and became Edgewood Country Club in 1934. In the early 1980s it was bought by the PGA Tour. The golf course was redesigned to TPC standards by golf course architect Pete Dye, and reopened as the “TPC of Connecticut” in 1984. The course underwent further remodelling in 1989, this time by Bobby Weed in consultation with tour pros Howard Twitty and Roger Maltbie, and renamed the TPC at River Highlands.

COURSE RECORD

The course record is 58 by PGA Tour pro Jim Furyk, which he shot during the final round of the 2016 Travelers Championship. A plaque, on the path beside the 18th green, commemorates his achievement, which is also the lowest 18-hole score in PGA Tour history. Previously, the record was held by amateur Patrick Cantlay, a 19-year-old collegian from UCLA, who set the course record of 60 at the Travelers Championship on June 24, 2011.

BMW INTERNATIONAL OPEN

The BMW International Open is an annual men’s professional golf tournament on the European Tour held in Germany.

Founded in 1989, it was held near BMW’s home city of Munich every year until 2012. From 1989 to 1993 and from 1997 to 2011 it was played at the Golfclub München Eichenried while from 1994 to 1996 it was held at St. Eurach Land-und-Golfclub. In 2012, 2014, 2016 and 2018, the event was played at Golf Club Gut Lärchenhof near Cologne, alternating with Golfclub München Eichenried, which hosted the event in 2011, 2013, 2015, 2017 and 2019.

The event was for a time the only European Tour event played in Germany, until the Porsche European Open moved to Germany in 2015.

GOLFCLUB MUNCHEN EICENRIED

From 1989 to 2002, there was only the 18-hole championship course designed by Kurt Roßknecht. The Munich Eichenried Golf Club has had 27 holes since 2002. The course extension was also designed by golf course architect Kurt Roßknecht in such a way that all three 9-hole loops end comfortably at the clubhouse. This required a specific routing and thus an “interlocking” of some old holes with the new ones on the B and C loops. The A loop was unaffected.

But at the BMW International Open it’s “back to the roots”, i.e. the sequence of holes is the same as in the early years. In the meantime, however, nothing is the same as it was back then: every year the course is improved and adapted to contemporary requirements. That means the fairways have long since been lengthened, because for many years the course was considered too easy. That’s history. After the renovation of the greens in 2019, these slightly undulating, lightning-fast professional greens are among the best in Germany and are highly praised by the pros.

OUR PICKS

BRIAN HARMAN 50/1

One of my top picks for the week is Brian.

We saw plenty of his golf last week at the US Open and the team liked what they saw. His tee to green game is on and he putted well on some very tricky greens. The main factor I saw was his driving accuracy which on tour is nearly 70% ranking third on the PGA Tour.

This will be a big plus around here, he is also a bentgrass specialist so should be setting up some good approach play this week. Over sixty bunkers here as well at TPC so this part of your game will need to also be tuned in that is for sure.

I was following him the last time he played Harbour town and there are a lot of similar features to a well-designed Pete Dye course set up here he looked good then so thinking plenty more to come this week. NAP of the week for the team and Mike

MACKENZIE HUGHES 80/1

Always throws in the odd missed cut here and there, but that’s why I like his odds from week to week. Some great value even though missed cuts are not that bad really, the odd shot and that has been it.

But I like his form right now three cuts made in a row and a solid US Open finishing in a tie for 24TH with a great 70 on Sunday where we saw most the field shoot well over par.

He is one of those players who just seems to turn up at golf courses that suit his eye like the RSM Classic winner of this event in 2016 when went runner up in 2021 so he follows trends like this over many events on the tour and the Travelers Championship is one of these for sure.

Third here in 2020 so looking to improve on this in 2022 so the next step has to be the win right?

Will we be saying Mr Mackenzie Hughes is now a two time PGA Tour winner? Let’s hope so.

SUNGJAE IM 28/1

The world number 21 tee’s it up here this week only just missing the cut last week at the US Open.

I did call the cut line at +4 if that was the case we could have got a few more into the weekend but hey we will take the overall winner in Fitz all day J

So let’s take out his missed cut last week and see his previous run of results:

  • Memorial – 10TH
  • Charles Schwab – 15TH
  • RBC Heritage – 21ST
  • Masters – 8TH

Four top twenty places out of five is pretty good going.

I think this is some of his best forming coming into the Travelers so could be well worth his money here this week.

Strokes gained off the tee is a big advantage playing a Pete Dye course so watch this space. Could be our third winner in June here.

BRENDON TODD 80/1

Old Toddy boy has been here early some of the team got here last week and already have been out with him twice. He has been playing some skins around here on the back nine and he has been cleaning up. He nearly made a hole in one on the 15TH the drivable par four in practice.

He just seems to be loving life right now and it is showing in his game that is for sure. Speaking to the team at the RBC Heritage Todd said that week something just seemed to click. Since that week he has made five out of six cuts and nearly won the Charles Schwab if his Sunday round was a little better.

Seven top 25’s this season I think at worst here he will manage a top 20 as well.

Plenty of positives and at this price I am all over this bet here.

OTHERS THAT COULD FEATURE

KEEGAN BRADLEY 33/1

Playing well local lad should be a lot of people backing him this week.

MITO PEREIRO 50/1

Form is on FIRE no reason he cant carry this onto this week. One to watch from the team.

JOAKIM LAGERGREN 150/1

So it’s time to play our good friend Joakim again and for good reason.

His current run into this week has not been the best reading I agree but let’s break down the past few shall we.

Soudal Open we thought he was striking very well just seemed poor on the greens that week and was only a couple of shots from getting into the weekend. Then the following week at the Dutch open the same story.

The Porsche Open on the other hand he has seemed to get everything working and looked impressive. Round one that week was solid and set his week up well.

Driving accuracy has improved plus putts per GIR which will be key to shooting low here this week.

If he starts well early doors then watch this space everything is trending well and the putter is looking hot once more.

RYAN FOX 22/1

Our PGA Championship 300/1 tip goes back in for us here. He came so very so to grabbing us a great place at that price back then only having a poor Sunday to drop the wrong way on the leader board in the end.

The follow week I did think he would be burnt out with the traveling and the media but he proved me wrong at the Dutch Open and came close to winning it. The US Open again he played well but only just missing the cut again.

He ticks a lot of boxes here this week and seems relaxed and well rested with no jet lag.

I think he starts strong in round one makes the cut with ease and if the putter and his short game is on then watch out field.

PABLO LARRAZABAL 35/1

Pablo is now ready to give us some good money back. Not played since the Porsche Open and has been in Germany for a while fine tuning his game for this week at this great course. We should also get a better price for him as the bookies will only be looking at his last few events but we are not really that bothered.

The driver was my main concern before the team advised me he has now sorted this. We had him on trackman most of last week and is figures with the big stick were pretty impressive. His dispersion was very good reading and seems now he has a go too shot which should keep him in play more often.

His iron play is always good and not many better putters in the field this week so could be a surprise package.

If he starts well we could be on here.

JORDAN SMITH 22/1

I followed his first round at the Qatar Masters this year back in March. One of team filmed every shot for me so I could review what I thought was happening with his game and we were right.

Off the tee was very good, tee to green also good it was around the greens and putting that cost him missing the cut that week. We showed this to his caddy at the practice sessions when we were at the Catalunya Championship and we think he took this on board with Jordan.

So we can now see since that change, I am not saying we had something to do with his change in results but since that missed cut check out his results since then:

  • Catalunya – 18TH
  • British Masters – 21ST
  • Dutch Open – 24TH
  • Porsche Open – 10TH

Improvement nearly every week so is ready now I feel to bag his second DP World Tour victory.

Could be at worst a top ten.

OTHERS THAT COULD FEATURE

ALVARO QUIROS 300/1

He did it for us in 2017 making him one of our biggest ever odds winners of all time can he do it again this week maybe a great ew bet.

DARREN FICHARDT 125/1

Could make this place look like a pitch and putt track. Could be under the radar at worse top 20.
