US OPEN HISTORY

The United States Open Championship, commonly known as the U.S. Open, is the annual open national championship of golf in the United States. It is the third of the four men’s major golf championships and is on the official schedule of both the PGA Tour and the European Tour. Since 1898 the competition has been 72 holes of stroke play (4 rounds on an 18-hole course), with the winner being the player with the lowest total number of strokes. It is staged by the United States Golf Association (USGA) in mid-June, scheduled so that, if there are no weather delays, the final round is played on the third Sunday. The U.S. Open is staged at a variety of courses, set up in such a way that scoring is very difficult, with a premium placed on accurate driving. As of 2024, the U.S. Open awards a $21.5 million purse, the largest of all four major championships.

SHINNECOCK HILLS GOLF CLUB

Founded in 1891, Shinnecock Hills Golf Club is one of the most historic golf institutions in the United States. It is the oldest incorporated golf club in the country and one of the five founding clubs of the USGA. Its clubhouse, completed in 1892 and designed by the architectural firm of McKim, Mead and White, has retained much of its original character despite several expansions and renovations, culminating in a major restoration finished in 2016.

The original 12-hole course was designed by Willie Davis and expanded to 18 holes in the spring of 1895. After four subsequent revisions, the current course—designed by William Flynn and built by Dick Wilson of Toomey and Flynn—opened for the 1931 season.

Shinnecock follows the natural contours of the surrounding hills and resembles many courses in the British Isles. Long regarded as one of the world’s finest courses, it has hosted major USGA events throughout its history, including the second U.S. Open and U.S. Amateur in 1896, the Women’s Amateur in 1900, and the Walker Cup in 1977. It later hosted the U.S. Open again in 1986, 1995, 2004, and 2018.

Shinnecock is scheduled to host the 2026 U.S. Open, followed by the 2036 U.S. Women’s Open and U.S. Open in consecutive years.

OUR TIPS

TYRRELL HATTON 30/1

Tyrrell heads into this week in excellent form after winning the most recent LIV event in Spain, finishing two shots clear of Jon Rahm over four rounds.

We have followed his performances on LIV this season, and he looks back to his best. He now has a strong chance to contend for his first major, especially on a course and setup that should suit him.

To get over the line this week, scrambling will be crucial. He is getting up and down around 75% of the time, well above the tour average of roughly 60%, which makes it a clear strength. He is a determined competitor who looks well equipped for the challenge this week and stands out as one of our NAPs.

RUSSELL HENLEY 45/1

Few players arrive this week in better form than Russell. He won the Charles Schwab just a few weeks ago and followed it with a solid top-25 finish at the Memorial.

In modern golf, especially in the majors, accuracy off the tee can matter more than distance. Here are some of his recent PGA Tour stats:

  • Driving Accuracy – 1st (71.89%)
  • Strokes Gained Total – 14th (1.050)
  • Proximity to the Hole – 12th
  • Scrambling – 1st (69.45%)

We followed him closely at this year’s Masters, and he was highly impressive, closing with rounds of 66 and 68 to finish tied for third alongside our other pick this week, Mr Hatton.

WYNDHAM CLARK 40/1

Next up is a proven PGA Tour winner with four titles already to his name.

He arrives this week in excellent form, having won the CJ Cup before finishing third at the Memorial. We followed much of his golf last week, both on and off the course, and there was plenty to like.

What stands out most from watching him in practice and on the putting green is the quality of his putting. His numbers are exceptional, and he could be one of the standout performers on the greens by Sunday evening.

Definitely one to watch.

BEN GRIFFIN 66/1

Ben has already had a few strong chances to get over the winning line in 2026.

At the Cadillac in April, he played well over the weekend and came close to winning. He was also impressive at the Charles Schwab a couple of weeks ago, finishing tied for third after another strong performance.

One of the strongest parts of his game is his bunker play. Players will not hit every green this week, and these bunkers can be extremely punishing, so it is no surprise to see him ranked first on the PGA Tour for sand saves.

We are spending time with his team later today, which should give us an even better sense of how he is feeling and playing.

BOB MACINTYRE 70/1

Bob was a late addition to our betting report largely because of what we saw from him last week at the Canadian Open. We believe this is the right time to back him. After a top-five finish at The Players and fourth place the following week at the Texas Open, he went quiet for a spell with a few missed cuts, which was understandable after such a busy run.

Last week, everything seemed to click back into place. He looked solid throughout and has already been showing encouraging signs in practice this week. He has a steady all-round game, and his putter is beginning to heat up again.
