VALSPAR CHAMPIONSHIP

The Valspar Championship is a professional golf tournament on the PGA Tour, played annually on the Copperhead Course at Innisbrook Resort and Golf Club in Palm Harbor, northwest of Tampa, Florida.

INNISBROOK RESORT

There are four golf courses at Innisbrook, all designed by Larry Packard, the oldest of which is the Island Course, which was completed in 1970. The Copperhead Course, venue for the PGA Tour’s Valspar Championship, came next in 1974, and originally had 27 holes before nine were used as the basis of the Highlands North Course. The final addition was the Highlands South Course.

Winners of the tournament have included major champions Jordan Spieth, Charl Schwartzel, Retief Goosen, Vijay Singh, and Jim Furyk.

COPPERHEAD COURSE

PAR 71 • 7,340 YARDS

The second course to be built at Innisbrook, The Copperhead Course is the most recognizable of Innisbrook’s four courses and has become a favorite among the world’s finest golf professionals. After all, it plays host to the PGA TOUR’s annual Valspar Championship each March. Play and imagine yourself hitting from the fairways graced by some of the world’s greatest, and challenge yourself to the Snake Pit, where tournaments have been won and lost.

On Copperhead, you’ll enjoy golf the way nature intended. Pine tree-lined fairways and rolling terrain define the course, and the surrounding lakes and ponds present water hazards that are also home to abundant wildlife including fox squirrels, bald eagles, alligators, blue herons, and many other types of waterfowl. Striking in both beauty and challenge – The Copperhead Course is a lengthy challenge for even the longest hitters at more than 7,200 yards and is a must-play at Innisbrook.

STEYN DEBUT EVENT

The inaugural Steyn City Championship makes its debut on the DP World Tour and Sunshine Tour schedule from 17 to 20 March 2022.

STEYN CITY NICKLAUS DESIGN

The championship golf course has become a magnet for keen golfers from all areas of the country; impressing not only with its challenging design and beautiful views but also the slick service of the halfway house and our golf team. Enjoy a sundowner on our Clubhouse terrace after your round.

The course presents 75 bunkers and several water features lining the generously wide, immaculate fairways. Winter-hardy grasses on the greens, tees, fairways and roughs guarantee a green surface, all year round. A looped course with changes in elevation, holes nine and 18 converge at the Clubhouse. The course is fully navigable by golf cart, and all carts are equipped with state-of-the-art GPS technology for our players’ safety and convenience.

The team got here early and already have walked the course and pretty much summed this place up as yet another easy resort type course, so will be plenty of low scores the same as last week where it will be down to the luck of the draw.

OUR PICKS

ABRAHAM ANCER 28/1

This Mexican has been on FIRE this season. I just love the way he seem to be improving and this has been shown with his latest results having made his last five cuts in a row. We caught up with him when he played the PIF Saudi International back at the start of Feb. That week we saw the best players in the world compete and he performed well managing a top ten that week.

He said he was looking forward to the Florida swing and was looking forward to the Valspar especially and checking his previous around here it’s no surprise. Sixteenth in 2018 and top five here last year.

Driving accuracy will be a big advantage here this week and at 69.70% ranked sixth on the PGA Tour he will be setting up plenty of birdie chances and with an average of 28.11 putts per GIR he is a must for this week.

LOUIS OOSTHUIZEN 18/1

For those of you that have followed us last year, you will remember how close Louis came to picking us a couple of winners in the majors. We tipped him for the PGA at 55/1 and again at the US Open 45/1 both times a runner up.

He is always a solid bet for us and feel this week is a perfect time to play him again.

Going under the radar is a good time to play him with the bookmakers. His record around here is very strange having missed the cut here for three years on the spin from 2013 to 2015 he has gone:

  • 2016 – 7TH
  • 2018 – 16TH
  • 2019 – 2ND
  • 2021 – 8TH

I expect another top ten at worse. Could be our banker bet for the week.

JASON KOKRAK 33/1

We tipped Jason at the Arnold Palmer a couple of weeks back it was an OK performance he ended up in a tie for twenty six place in the end. I feel he does a bit better this week and could get close to getting yet another outright winner for 2022.

Having been with him the week he won the Hewlett Packard it was some impressive play over the weekend to seal the deal that week, closing with a 66/65.

His overall game suits it around here and I like the experience he has gained since playing at this event he has had two top twenty’s and three top ten finishes over the past six years. So my horses for courses pick.

Sand saves and putting are another two strong pointers for me also. One to watch this week.

BUBBA WATSON 45/1

Liking the Bubba play here this week in the build up to the Masters he has started to appear a lot more on the leader boards this year. As they say class in permanent. So with the late finish at the Players his game is looking good and some of the shots he has pulled of this week already means to me he is only a few shots away from another win.

Runner up in Saudi and then another good week in Phoenix where he always seems to play well.

The strange thing is even though his results have been good in 2022 his stats read worse, with his greens in regulation, strokes gained putting and driving distance all negative since the start of the season.

I just think he makes the cut and should have a good week.

DENNY MCCARTHY 100/1

Another player looking for his breakthrough win on the PGA Tour. We like the way he is swinging it at the moment and feel he has gained enough experience around here now to really challenge for top spot. He managed a top ten here in 2019 and feel he will do better this year so another one to watch. ew

ON THE SHORT LIST

BRENDON TODD 125/1

MARTIN LAIRD 150/1

JACO ATHERS 125/1

Jaco is such a great person to be around. We have known him and this family for a while now playing his golf on the Sunshine and Challenge Tour’s. Only last week we caught up with him in Thailand sinking a few Leo’s after his Sunday round.

He is so relaxed of late and the golf is in good nick the swing he says has never felt better.

It has been three years now since his last win on the AFR Tour at the Dimension Data. He can go low around here so should be making the cut easy enough one to watch for sure this week.

JORDAN SMITH 18/1

**NAP Alert**

Previous Results:

  • HSBC – 12TH JAN 2022
  • DUBAI CLASSIC – 9TH JAN 2022
  • RAS AL KHAMAH – 2ND FEB 2022
  • MYGOLFLIFE – 2ND MARCH 2022

Will be all over this pick here this week. He has these great results and still putted OK so when the putter gets hot this week he could be winning this thing by three of four shots.

The best club in his bag is the driver the work he has put in over the off season is now paying off he is now ranked 20th on the DP World Tour compared to 86th last season.

Not much else to say apart from how much you want to bet on him this week. Will be in the mix for sure.

OLIVER BEKKER 28/1

I am going with Oliver again this week we had tipped him up for the Kenya Open. We were so unlucky that week he finished in a tie for 8TH place when the bookies were paying 7 places. The final round he had was special and the boys out there really thought he was going to challenge a 59 at one point. He scored the best round of the day so all positives if we need him to go low this Sunday for the win.

He is a horses for courses fit as well here. We have seen him out in practice this week and he ticks all the boxes needed to get the job done here.

  • SG Off the Tee
  • SG Putting
  • Bogey Avoidance
  • Birdie Performance
  • Scrambling

Great odds for a good chance to win it.
