THE BUTTERFIELD BERMUDA CHAMPIONSHIP
NEDBANK GOLF CHALLENGE
The Butterfield Bermuda Championship is a professional golf tournament on the PGA Tour that debuted in October/November 2019 as part of the 2020 season. The tournament is played at the Port Royal Golf Course, designed by Robert Trent Jones, in Southampton Parish, Bermuda. Originally designated as an alternate event, opposite the WGC-HSBC Champions, the prize fund in 2019 was US$3,000,000.
In 2020 and 2021, as a result of successive cancellations of the WGC-HSBC Champions due to COVID-19 pandemic considerations, the tournament was elevated to full FedEx Cup point event status, with the winner earning a Masters Tournament invitation. As a full-field tournament, the prize fund was US$4 million in the 2020, and US$6.5 million in 2021 as Butterfield Bank joined the Bermuda Tourism Board as co-title sponsors.
PORT ROYAL GOLF COURSE
Located in the Southampton Parish, Southampton Golf Club, as the course was originally known, was founded in 1965 under the chairmanship of Mr. Reginald Tucker, with land being purchased in July 1965 after being given the go-ahead on 15 June 1965 from G.H. Taylor Director of Public Works. The plan however was potentially jeopardised because some of the area was originally farmland and one owner refused to sell his property to the course. Undaunted, construction finally got under way in earnest on 1 December 1967, and the project was renamed Port Royal Golf Course.
The course was the creation of golf course architect, Robert Trent Jones. Design had to be changed several times initially due to land agreements, however this rerouting lead to the creation of the world famous, and much photographed, spectacular 16th hole – the tee and green of which perch precariously on cliffs overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.
The course was finally completed and opened in 1970. More recently, it underwent renovation in preparation for the hosting of the 2009 PGA Grand Slam of Golf. A member of the original design team, Roger Rulewich, has headed up this $14.5 million project and the course was officially reopened on 21 July 2009.

The Nedbank Golf Challenge, previously known as the Million Dollar Challenge, is an annual men’s professional golf tournament played at the Gary Player Country Club in Sun City, North West province, South Africa. It was first played in 1981 and takes place towards the end of the year, in November or December.
For many years the tournament was a small-field invitational stroke play event with typically 12 players competing. Since it became a European Tour event in 2013, the field size has increased, to 30 from 2013 to 2015 and to 72 in 2016. Originally it was not an official event for any of the major tours.
GARY PLAYER CC
The Gary Player Country Club is a golf club in Sun City, South Africa, named after golf icon and Grand Slam winner, Gary Player. It is home to one of the world’s longest golf courses, at almost 8,000 yards.
The Gary Player designed championship course is widely considered to be one of the best in South Africa, and one of the world’s top 100. It has been voted the best several times by both Golf Digest and Complete Golfer, the leading golf magazines in the country. Player has designed almost 400 championship courses around the world, but this is the only course that officially carries his name.

- Accuracy of distance again here
- Par 5’s reachable by most of the field this week
- Need to be a steady golfer around here keep your head pot your way around
- Bentgrass Greens
- Narrow Fairways this week so need accuracy
- Different tee boxes will be in play daily so will challenge all golfers

OUR PICKS
CAMERON PERCY 150/1
First up is a pick I had in from last week Mr Percy at another great looking odds here again with William Hill at 150/1.
This course should suit his game a little better than last week I feel. He played well last week do not get me wrong I just feel this week it’s an even weaker field and could be his best chance to picking up that first PGA Tour win.
Boxes he ticks for me:
- Wind Positive player
- Bermuda Positive
- Coastal Positive
- Driving Accuracy needed he is at 62.73% on the PGA Tour
For me it’s the flat stick but feel the work our team have seen he doing over the past few months is really starting to pay off now. He has looked great on the greens already in the practice rounds here so he could have a solid week on the greens here.
One to watch!!!
RYAN ARMOUR 200/1
This my big punt of the week and feel it could be his week here.
OK so coming in it is not the best reading, with five missed cuts prior to the WWT last week it was only his weekend golf that saw him drop down the leader board to finish in 73RD place.
After talking to him this week I feel that making the cut has given him so much confidence and this should follow onto this week’s golf.
His stats are not great reading as you can imagine but his facts we have picked up that will come into play around here are the following:
- Driving Accuracy 70.16% 3RD PGA Tour
- GIR 68.60% 41ST PGA Tour
- Proximity to Hole 5TH PGA Tour
I would also like to cover this pick with a top 20 bet as well this week.
LUKE LIST 25/1
Now we come to the under 30/1 picks now we did have Detry in the frame until this man was mentioned to us whilst we were doing our work home for you. I think most punters will have the blinker on here and be back Detry but they might be very wrong.
Luke at these odds is a far better player and coming in a lot hotter than most of the players lower in the market.
Check out his last few events which included a win at the Sanderson Farms yes a win on the PGA Tour:
- 35TH Scottish Open
- 25TH Fortinet
- Winner – Sanderson
- 18TH Shriners
- 45TH WWT
There is so much to like with this bet, he has won back to back years on the PGA Tour since 2020.
Off the tee scoring this week will be key, I feel he will ranks close to number one spot for this category. Will just need that putter to start to work in rounds one and two then he will build from that. This will be my under 25/1 odds pick of the week.
LANTO GRIFFIN 60/1
He always seems to turn up and get us a good pay day, I feel coming into this week he is now ready to again get us some big money back.
Recent form suggests this could be his week to get another PGA Tour win and feel his golf game is hitting those heights of 2019.
With a much weaker field here he could run away with the win.
ON THE LIST FOR UPSET
BRIAN GAY 150/1
MATT WALLACE 40/1
Chelsea boy Matty goes in first for me this week. After playing a few rounds at Wentworth over the years with him and JT it is no real surprise to see him finally get over the line on the PGA Tour winning the Corales back in March this year.
These odds are great for us this week, he should be on paper one of the odds on this week to seal the deal here.
His last missed cut was way back at the Open since then he has been impressive on both tours, if fact he came close to winning the D+D Czech Masters and also has been knocking on the door at the Dunhill Links and just recently another top ten at the Qatar Masters.
Greens in regulation solid, tee to green solid, if the putter turns up watch out the field.
As with my NAP of the week in Van Rooyen last week Matt is mine here.
AARON RAI 25/1
If you’re after another solid bet then Aaron is your man here.
Ticks a hell of a lot of boxes so score low around here:
- SG Tee to Green +
- Driving Accuracy +
- Scrambling +
- Form +
Another player who over the years has played on so many tours gaining plenty of experience all over the world. Like Tommy two gloves he feels it gives him more control and why not he has had a pretty good career so far.
Two time winner on the DP World Tour with his last one being the Scottish Open in 2020.
We were with his group at the Canadian Open and he played so well that week finishing in a tie for 3RD in the end.
On the PGA Tour he has gone 20-MC-49-28-21 and on the DP MC-39-2-MC-9
He should be good value for us and love this price.
JASON SCRIVENER 90/1
Sticking with our Aussie connection here this week. One of our team has been tracking Jason for over the past year at many events building up a great profile of his stats and playing rounds broken down and here is why we think he will be in the frame this week.
Current form as we have advised based on previous winners here is a must, he ticks that box having a top ten last week in Qatar.
His accuracy off the tee is a massive strength, this in turn has led to an amazing green in regulation percentage.
Good ball strikers course this so he fits that glove, also a great putter Bentgrass putter.
One to watch here and at 100/1 in places could be great little pay day again folks.
