QATAR MASTERS
CORALES CHAMPIONSHIP

The Qatar Masters is a European Tour golf tournament held at Doha Golf Club in Doha, Qatar. When founded in 1998, it was one of two European Tour events to be staged in the Arabian Peninsula, but is currently one of six. From 2005 to 2007 the tournament was co-sanctioned by the Asian Tour.

The tournament had modest fields in its early years, but with the aid of “promotional” money paid to top golfers to appear, and being scheduled within a three-week period that included events in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, it developed to have one of the European Tour’s strongest fields.

In 2018, due to travel restrictions between the UAE and Qatar as a result of the ongoing diplomatic dispute in the Arab World, it was moved to later in the year, and is no longer held at the same time as the Abu Dhabi and Dubai events. The date change coincided with a reduction in prize money, and resulted in a lower field strength than previous editions.

DOHA GOLF CLUB

The Doha Golf Club in Doha, Qatar is an 18-hole, 7,374-yard, par 72 championship course that was designed by Peter Harradine. The Doha Golf Club is also one of the first grass golf course ever built in the Middle East. Open to non-members, it has a 2 808 yards long floodlit nine-hole academy course, and a clubhouse with three restaurants and a golf shop.

The club hosts the Qatar Masters golf tournament.

The Doha Golf Club was designed with eight strategically positioned lakes, 65 giant cacti which were imported from the deserts of Arizona, more than 10 000 green trees and shrubs, numerous limestone formations and an abundance of lush and lengthy fairways, which were all designed to present a startling contrast to the desert that surrounds this green golf club.

The Corales Puntacana Championship is a golf tournament in the Dominican Republic on the PGA Tour, formerly on the Web.com Tour. It was first played in 2016 at the Puntacana Resort and Club, on the east coast in the La Altagracia province.

After two years as a Web.com Tour event, it transitioned to a PGA Tour alternate event (opposite the WGC Match Play in Texas), starting in March 2018. The first PGA Tour event held in the Dominican Republic, it is similar in rewards to other alternate events: 300 FedEx Cup points for the winner, a two-year tour exemption, 24 OWGR points, but no invitation to the Masters Tournament.

The inaugural event in 2016 was held in early June, then moved to early May in 2017.

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 tournament was postponed until September when it was part of the 2020–21 PGA Tour season. It was also elevated to full FedEx Cup point event status, with the winner receiving a 2021 Masters Tournament invitation.

CORALES GOLF COURSE

Designed by Tom Fazio and opened in 2010, Corales is an exclusive and dramatic 18-hole course with six Caribbean Oceanside holes. Designed along the natural cliffs, bays, ocean coves and the inland lakes and coralina quarries, Corales Golf Course rates among the World’s finest Golf Experiences. The exhilarating challenge culminates playing the Devil’s Elbow, Corales’s last three holes. The Devil’s Elbow features the striking eighteenth hole with a dramatic forced carry over the cliff lined Bay of Corales, an inspired capstone to a memorable and breathtaking golf experience.

Aside from one of the premiere Punta Cana golf courses, the Corales residential community features a private enclave of luxurious homes and golf view estate lots. The seven hundred acres of the Corales community are just a part of the extensive acreage of the Puntacana Resort & Club. Membership opportunities await both Corales Residents as well as the homeowners throughout the Resort. With the Resort owning the Punta Cana International Airport and the airport’s private VIP Terminal located in Corales, not only is accessing Corales convenient but flight paths are detoured as not to disturb the peace of this exclusive residential community nor to break the concentration of the Club’s golfers.

OUR PICKS
HENNIE DU PLESSIS 66/1

Our first round leader bet from last week really impressed me. He fell back the wrong way on the leader board on Sunday which is never great but from what I saw of him in rounds one and two were all I needed to get him in again this week. So his first two opening rounds on his past two events have been 66 and 62.

But both final rounds read the same 72.

This said he has still managed a top 25 at the Steyn and a top ten at the MyGolfLife.

Plenty to like here and also played this event twice and made the cut twice so should get into the weekend and let’s pray his Sunday is better.

NIKLAS LEMKE 100/1

Niklas for me is well overdue four good rounds of golf to be put together. He has been in and out of Q school since 2007 but I believe he will still yet break through and make a name for himself. Whilst he was studying at Arizona State Uni back in 2007 he held the third best stroke average the only two players to beat him were Paul Casey and Phil Mickelson.

Still in his thirties and feel once that win comes he will get a few more. I like his chances here and from what the team have seen over the past couple of months he is ready to seal a great week.

MARCUS KINHULT 55/1

Another Sweed has made it into my picks this week with the great Marcus Kinhult.

Winner of the Betfred British Masters in 2019 and has also come close at the Nedbank and the Open de France in previous years.

The team were present at the GolfStar Winter Series in February this year and witnessed some special play him. Only the three rounds but what a three rounds 69-65-70 to win it by one shot.

His last DP World Tour event was in Keyna where again he managed another good week in a tie for eighth place.

I do like this bet here watch this space.

OTHERS ON THE LIST
JORDAN SMITH 20/1
WILCO NIENABER 45/1

CAMERON PERCY 80/1

This is one player I was not that sure of here this week but I am taking the teams choice and trusting them with this pick.

Inside the world’s top four hundred and seems to be playing well in spells this year. He has missed a fair amount of cuts this season but his recent ones have only been by the one shot so unfair to be honest.

The team followed him at the Puerto Rico Open and were very impressed and see this week’s set up and course very much the same so should suit his eye and should feel relaxed playing his game here.

He had a top twenty here in 2020 so expect more of the same. Will need him to get off to a fast start this week.

THOMAS DETRY 40/1

Thomas is making an appearance here this week and for good reason. His overall game just suits the Corales golf course.

So his previous around here reads 33/33/13 improving here year on year.

His last four events coming in have been 9-54-26-57.

I am not sure how he is still without a DP World tour victory, with four second places at the Scottish Open, Celtic Classic, Hero Open and the BMW Open over the past four years.

His time will come and I think that time is NOW.

NATE LASHLEY 30/1

Nate is my own personal NAP of the week and with good reason. Previous winner here back in 2017 when it was played on the Korn Ferry Tour, he also came very close to winning it again in 2020. Just a creature of comfort and this place feels like his home.

His first PGA Tour title came very late in his career winning the Rocket Mortgage Classic in the 2018-2019 season.

His missed cuts this year have all been down to a few missed putts but this seemed to have changed at the Valspar so liking this trend and if he can keep this strokes gained putting into this week then he could be the champion again.

OTHERS ON THE LIST
BRICE GARNETT 33/1
EMILIANO GRILLO 40/1

Last minute addition from the team here with Emiliano we went around with him yesterday and he looked awesome and built for these conditions here. His poor 2022 form is the reason we have got 40/1 ranked one of top in the field from the world rankings so if he turns it around here we have a great shout.
