Played annually on South Korea’s Jeju Island, THE CJ CUP will make a one-year move to Shadow Creek in Las Vegas before returning to Asia in 2021.

THE CJ CUP @ SHADOW CREEK will once again feature a 78-player field highlighted by reigning FedExCup champion Dustin Johnson and fellow FedExCup winners Justin Thomas and Rory McIlroy.

FIELD NOTES: Brooks Koepka, winner of the 2018 CJ CUP @ NINE BRIDGES, is scheduled to make his return after a two-month layoff due to injury… All of the top five golfers in the Official World Golf Ranking will tee it up at Shadow Creek including Johnson, Thomas, McIlroy, Jon Rahm and Collin Morikawa… Sponsor exemptions into the limited-field event include Tommy Fleetwood, Rickie Fowler, Sergio Garcia, Shane Lowry, Ian Poulter, and past FedExCup winners Justin Rose and Jordan Spieth… Tony Finau will return to action after testing positive for COVID-19… Joo-Hyung Kim is among the Korean contingent who earned spots into THE CJ CUP. The 18-year-old has played two PGA TOUR events thus far this season, making the cut in both. He already has four professional wins on his resume.

FEDEXCUP: Winner receives 500 FedExCup points.

COURSE: Shadow Creek, par 72, 7,527 yards (yardage subject to change). The Tom Fazio-designed desert oasis, which opened in 1990, has been long known as one of the world’s most exclusive clubs. It played host to the first made-for-TV match between Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson, giving fans a glimpse of the layout. Dustin Johnson has the course record (66), while Woods and Fred Couples shared the record prior to Fazio’s restoration in 2008 (60). About 30 minutes from the Las Vegas Strip, the course feels far from your usual desert golf experience with its rolling mounds, creeks, waterfalls, peaks and valleys.

STORYLINES: Thomas has won two of the three CJ CUPs in South Korea and will look to see if that success will transfer over to the United States…This is the second of two events in Las Vegas after the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open… Koepka has been on the shelf for the last two months after withdrawing from both the opening event of the FedExCup Playoffs and the U.S. Open as he rehabbed an injury. This will be his first start on the PGA TOUR since a missed cut at the Wyndham Championship… Patrick Cantlay will look to continue his Las Vegas heater at Shadow Creek. Cantlay has finished 1-2-2 at the Shriners the last three seasons and shared the 36-hole lead heading into the weekend in 2020.

72-HOLE RECORD: 267, Brooks Koepka (2018)

18-HOLE RECORD: 62, Ryan Palmer (Fourth round, 2018)

LAST TIME: Thomas shot a 5-under 67 Sunday to top Danny Lee, who was born in South Korea, by two shots at the 2019 CJ CUP @ NINE BRIDGES. Thomas held the 54-hole lead and despite making a bogey on the par-3 17th hole, he bounced back with a closing birdie to win his 11th PGA TOUR title. It was also his second CJ CUP victory after winning the inaugural event in 2017. Lee’s runner-up result was his best in the 2019-20 PGA TOUR season. Hideki Matsuyama, Gary Woodland, and Cameron Smith finished at 15-under and rounded out the top five.

He is stedly finding his game with a couple of great weeks back on UK soil. Let’s face it he never plays Wentworth well and over the years whenever we have spoken to him he never seems happy playing West course. It’s just one of those places he can’t seem to get it round, apart from last week this is and the main reason he goes this week for me.

  • Scottish Open – 6th
  • BMW PGA – 5th

Well used to travelling as a seasoned Pro the only issue could be his back, but from what we saw yesterday he looked good on the range and looked loose.

So on great form and coming back to a course and area he loves in Vegas. Fantastic record here as well:

2017 – 15th                 2018 – 10th                 2019 – 16th

At 66’s I feel this is a must on any betting slip this week.

Always been a very good banker for us over the years and especial at the Masters.

He played well last week, he has not been in contention for a while and as a late entry he performed well. What did like about his game was the putter finally started to work in rounds one and two. This can only be a positive in my mind as he putts better on faster bent grass.

Another thing with Shane I have noticed is he seems to be scoring better over in the US and fitting in on the PGA Tour very well. The team got to spend a bit of time with him at the St Jude in August where he had a solid week shooting 68/69/67/67 to finish in a tie for sixth.

As we know a great greens in regulation player and a short game expert, he will be making a lot of brides here and hope to see the flat stick behave itself all week.

Tipped Cameron a few times in the past and he really has not delivered so expecting a better return from him here this week.

As was James Hahn last week a horses for courses pick here is the same with Cameron.

Top twenty finish last week at the Shriners, where he shot a very impressive 63 on Friday to make the cut.

Twice a winner on the PGA Tour and a two time winner of the Australian PGA Championship in 2017 and 2018.He also holds a great playoff record so what with the amount of play-offs being played this year he will be tough to beat if in contention.

Oh and did I forget to say he likes it a lot around here:

  • 2017 – 3rd
  • 2018 – 7th
  • 2019 – 3rd

Not bad reading for a player at 100/1

One to watch this week he is on fire this season.

  • 43rd in the FedEx Cup
  • 46th in the World Rankings

Played two events the US Open in September had a great week, managed a top twenty five finish, but what we did like was his scoring last week 68/66/67/66 to close at 17 under par and in a tie for 13th place.

The strange thing from last week was he dropped in strokes gained in putting which is not like him at all. He was only half a shot up per round where we normally see this nearer the two shot gain per round, if that was the case he could have challenged for the win last week.

Winner of the Greenbrier this year, having only gained his PGA Tour card in 2019 is pretty impressive reading.

I think this man from Chile could go very close this week.

My banker for the week.

After watching Richie playing last week close up boy was his ball striking on point. He flights the ball perfect for links golf so I was very surprised he scored so well around the West course, but with it being so wet and the greens were set up like a dart board everyone seemed to benefit and score well.

Three time European Tour winner and has been knocking on the door for number four for a while now.

His best results of his career have been on courses where you need to move the ball both ways, flight it high and low and have to drive the ball long.

2014 – Alfred Dunhill Links – St Andrews, Carnoustie & Kingbarns  – 2nd

2012 – Omega European Masters – Crans Sur Sierre – Winner

2015 – Trophee Hassan II – Golf du Palais Royal – Winner

All of these tracks are very similar and fit his game as will The Torrance Course at Fairmont this week.

Craig is having a very nice season and has had some great finishes over the season so far.

  • July – Austrian Open – 4th
  • Aug – Wales Open – 21st
  • Aug – UK Championship – 5th
  • Sept – Irish Open – 25th

He plays Challenge Tour as well as European Tour events and is still looking for that break through win. I just feel it’s not that far away and it could be very fitting that he does it on home soil.

Confidence is high playing some his best golf after having three months off and just hitting off a mat in his back garden, he carded his first bogey free round for quite some time and looks ready for the challenge here this week.

It could be still a bit early for that win but he is about ready so you never know.

Grant is another player who will be enjoying the challenge here this week. Yet to win on the European Tour but feel he could be getting the job done very soon and in a good run of form since the Andalucía Masters.

Tied 14th in Portugal then followed that with another top twenty at the Scottish Open. Last week he was featuring at the top of the leader board after rounds one and two where he carded scores of 69/67 only to see him hit a poor Saturday 76 and closed with a 72.

He should still be taking a lot of confidence into here and no reason why this good play will not continue.

Fairways seem wide around here so accuracy is not much of an issue off the tee, distance will be one of the main factors and he currently ranks 12th on the European Tour for driving distance with an average of 316.95.
