JOHN DEERE CLASSIC AT TPC DEERE RUN

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.9.2″ _module_preset=”default” text_font=”|600|||||||” text_text_color=”#000000″]

TPC Deere Run is host to the PGA TOUR’s John Deere Classic July 7-11, 2021. TPC Deere Run has been the proud host of the John Deere Classic since 2000 and this year marks the 50th anniversary of the John Deere Classic. The John Deere Classic is the Quad Cities’ premier golf tournament and the only PGA TOUR event in the region.

The John Deere Classic debuted on the PGA TOUR as the Quad Cities Open in 1971. The John Deere Classic is held annually in July. The tournament’s champions list includes some of the most recognized, and in some cases, most decorated names in golf: Deane Beman, Roger Maltbie, D.A. Weibring, Payne Stewart, Vijay Singh and Steve Stricker. At the same time, the John Deere Classic has been a breakthrough tournament for 18 TOUR players, who earned their first victory on the PGA TOUR at TPC Deere Run.

TPC Deere Run COURSE OVERVIEW

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.9.2″ _module_preset=”default” text_font=”|600|||||||” text_text_color=”#000000″]

There was perhaps no architect more suited to craft TPC Deere Run golf course than designer, D.A. Weibring. As an Illinois native and three-time champion of the Quad Cities Classic (the forerunner to the John Deere Classic currently hosted by the club), Weibring knew exactly how to bring out the best of the picturesque Mid-Mississippi River Valley landscape while staying true to the PGA TOUR’s standards and traditions.

Weibring instilled an old-time feel to the TPC Deere Run golf course, providing a great blend of challenge and playability. “It has all the things I think you’d like to have in a golf course,” says Weibring. “There are elevation changes, great views and scenery, hardwood trees. You have the Rock River complemented with small ponds and deep ravines… and best of all, there’s no real estate. What’s more, the natural features of the former Arabian horse farm high above the Rock River Valley have not been compromised.”

Some of golf’s greatest names have found themselves seriously challenged by the risk-reward layout at TPC Deere Run each year at the John Deere Classic.

My first pick for this week goes to Mr Power. Talk about a guy in form:

  • Seven straight cuts made
  • Three top tens
  • Two top Twenties
  • Moved from 454 in the world to 237

We have seen a lot of rookies picking up wins on the PGA Tour this season, and I feel it’s only a matter of times before we see this from Seamus.

He has grown in confidence since joining the PGA Tour in 2017 and has now been playing some of his best golf in years.

The main factor from the team was his proximity to the hole average, which has been a winning combo for past winners here over the years. A good strokes gained total and a good par four performer so this should also be noted as a big plus.

We caught up with Scott at the AT&T this year and he seemed in good spirits that week and was striking it pure. This was proven by his third place finish in the end.

He has had a very mix bag this season which is nothing really unheard off, his record playing here is pretty much the same to be fair. He went three missed cuts here from 2012 to 2014 then really learnt how to get around here in 2016, where he had a great top twenty.

He is steadily improving at the tournament and see no reason why he can’t win this at a venue that suits his eye.

Not won since 2014 so well overdue and could be adding PGA Tour victory number four here this week.

Trusting the team here with this pick. Coming off the back of four missed cuts back in April this year he then went:

  • Valspar – 13TH
  • AT&T – 17TH
  • Palmetto – 31ST
  • Travelers – 5TH
  • Rocket – 4TH

I can see why is was on the short list for the team with those results. Greens in regulation is the main factor why he has gone in here this week and should be setting up plenty of birdies.

He seems to be a player who is learning his trade well and progressing through the Tours very well, ticking a lot of boxes on route to picking up his first PGA Tour win will be his next achievement.

The other turn around that the team has seen over the past few weeks has been the putter his hard work with his coach seems to now be paying off and this can only be another positive.

The Renaissance Club, North Berwick, Scotland

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.9.2″ _module_preset=”default” text_font=”|600|||||||” text_text_color=”#000000″]

The Renaissance Club was founded on respect for the traditions of the game. Tom Doak was hired to create a world-class course with regard to his renowned ability to move very little earth; showcasing the natural features of an incredible property such as Renaissance.

Our greens crew hails from the local area and brings vast experience of links turf. The condition of the course is paramount and has already resulted in the Renaissance Club being approached with regard to hosting major international tournaments. At over 7300 yards, par 71, the back tees are not for the fainthearted. Fear not as the variety of tees (7300 – 5500 yards) allows members to mix and match teeing grounds on a hole-by-hole basis, usually dependent on the wind!

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_divider _builder_version=”4.9.2″ _module_preset=”default”][/et_pb_divider][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.9.2″ _module_preset=”default” text_font=”Squada One|700|||||||” text_text_color=”#000000″ text_font_size=”27px”]

The Renaissance Club our thoughts:

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.9.2″ _module_preset=”default” text_font=”|600|||||||” text_text_color=”#000000″]

Tucked between Muirfield and North Berwick. Two of the greatest links courses in the world – and then try to create a course, from scratch, which gets close to the quality of those great tracks was not going to be easy. But that was the vision of a wealthy American Jerry Savardi – and boy what a job he has done here.

The architect is Tom Doak has been a good friend of the GBT team. He has a great philosophy for building golf courses. In his introduction to the The Anatomy of a Golf Course, Ben Crenshaw says, ‘”It is up to the golf architect to present us with a thinking contest as well as a physical one”. That’s a great philosophy but I can’t help thinking Doak hasn’t quite lived up to that ideal here.

Doak has been quite open that he was asked to design a course which would be suitable for professional championship play and, in the 21st century, that tends to mean one thing – length is paramount. There are numerous long carries off the tees (playing a 500 yards+ par 4 into the wind with a long carry over heavy bracken is good fun).

The course at the Renaissance Club itself isn’t your traditional links setup. The ground is actually quite undulating – especially as you get down to the new holes near the water and into the back 9, and there is a lot of heavy rough in play just off the fairways. The greens are really tricky, with some huge mounds and positioning your approach shots relative to the pin is vital.

Lots of Scot’s on offer to pick from this week but for me the best value pick has to be Grant.

We knew grant before he turned professional back then he was off +5 in 2016 before turning professional. Since then he has been slowly finding his feet playing on various tours and of course the European Tour is now starting to show some good results.

Last week was his biggest prize money event, bagging him just over one hundred thousand euros. On paper and the way he has been playing 2021 this could be his best year ever so lots of positives for me and the team with our selection.

He grew up in Livingston playing out of a course called Graigielaw GC and to get to a +5 handicap around there he sure knows how to play golf in tough conditions.

Back on home soil watch the space.

Since “BEEF” burst on the scene a few years ago now all for the wrong reasons in my option. Rather than focusing on his golf he was doing a John Daly with wrong way around. Now I feel he is in a place where he has been able to manage both sides of his career and the main focus since lock down has been his golf performances.

2016 was that first break through win in Spain and we thought there would be plenty more to come for him, in fact he has come close over the year’s runner up at the Indian Open in 2018. Also two tied fourth places at the Italian Open and the Scottish Open in 2019.

But we like what he is doing right now and feel he will pull on a lot of good memories around this venue here this week and put on a great show for us.

Coming off a top fifteen at the BMW Open and only last week in Ireland again a great top ten.

It could be coming home for the BEEF

We have known Aaron for quite some time now. He even came back to play on a Clutch Pro Tour event only a few months ago which was great to see. It was for good reason and he planned his schedule to play tracks and work out playing tactics through the year.

He will well ready for this week and should be full of confidence after a good couple of weeks and a solid twelve place in Ireland last week. Two time winner on the European Tour and will be picking up some more silverware very soon. He ticks all the horses for courses fit around here so can’t wait to see him in action on Thursday.

If he makes the cut he could go low.
