US OPEN HISTORY
The United States Open Championship, commonly known as the U.S. Open, is the annual open national championship of golf in the United States. It is the third of the four men’s major golf championships and is on the official schedule of both the PGA Tour and the European Tour. Since 1898 the competition has been 72 holes of stroke play (4 rounds on an 18-hole course), with the winner being the player with the lowest total number of strokes. It is staged by the United States Golf Association (USGA) in mid-June, scheduled so that, if there are no weather delays, the final round is played on the third Sunday. The U.S. Open is staged at a variety of courses, set up in such a way that scoring is very difficult, with a premium placed on accurate driving. As of 2024, the U.S. Open awards a $21.5 million purse, the largest of all four major championships.
USGA AT OAKMONT
The United States Golf Association (USGA) and Oakmont Country Club have a long-standing relationship. The Club first joined the organization in 1903, and W.C. Fownes, Jr. served as the organization’s president in 1926-27. Over the years, countless OCC members have served in the USGA ranks, many on the organization’s Executive Committee.
Over the last century-plus, Oakmont has played host to 17 USGA Championships. The United States Open Championship has been contested here a record nine times, with the tenth coming in 2025. The U.S. Amateur Championships was the first USGA event at the Club in 1919, and has been played here six times overall. In 1992, the Club hosted its first of two U.S. Women’s Open Championships. Of the 17 champions, eight have been enshrined in the World Golf Hall of Fame.
As Oakmont looks to the future, the calendar is full of USGA Championships. The U.S. Open will return in 2025, 2033, 2042 and 2049. The U.S. Women’s Open returns to Oakmont in 2028 and 2038. In 2032, the Club will host its first Walker Cup Matches, pitting the best American amateurs against the best amateurs from Great Britain and Ireland. In 2046, the U.S. Women’s Amateur will be decided on Oakmont’s links for the first time.
