WELLS FARGO HISTORY

The Wells Fargo Championship is a professional golf tournament in North Carolina on the PGA Tour. Held in early May at the Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, it has attracted some of the top players on the tour. It debuted in 2003 as the Wachovia Championship and was known in 2009 and 2010 as the Quail Hollow Championship. In 2017, the tournament offered a $7.5 million purse with a winner’s share of $1.35 million.

From 2004–06 and 2011–13, the tournament ended in a playoff. Additionally, the event has one of the tougher finishes on tour with 16, 17, and 18, commonly known as the “Green Mile,” often ranked among the PGA Tour’s toughest holes. Organized by Champions for Education, Inc., the majority of the charitable proceeds from the tournament benefit Teach for America.

THE GREEN MILE

In 2017, the tournament was held on the coast in Wilmington at Eagle Point Golf Club, as Quail Hollow hosted the PGA Championship in mid-August. Wilmington hosted the Azalea Open on tour in the 1950s and 1960s at the Donald Ross-designed Cape Fear Country Club; it was a tune-up event for The Masters through 1965, part of the city’s Azalea Festival.

In 2022, the tournament will be held near Washington, D.C. at TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm in Potomac, Maryland, as Quail Hollow is scheduled to host the Presidents Cup in late September.

Decades earlier, Quail Hollow hosted the PGA Tour’s Kemper Open eleven times, from 1969 through 1979.

THE BRITISH MASTERS HISTORY

The Betfred British Masters is a professional golf tournament. It was founded in 1946 as the Dunlop Masters and was held every year up to 2008, except for 1984. Dunlop’s sponsorship ended in 1982, and the name sponsor changed frequently thereafter, with the words “British Masters” usually also in the tournament’s official name. The tournament was not held from 2009 to 2014 but returned to the schedule in 2015.

Since 2015 a leading British golfer chooses the golf course and hosts the event. The players so far are as follows:

2015: Ian Poulter at Woburn Golf Club

2016: Luke Donald at The Grove

2017: Lee Westwood at Close House Golf Club

2018: Justin Rose at Walton Heath Golf Club

2019: Tommy Fleetwood at Hillside Golf Club

2020: Lee Westwood at Close House Golf Club

2021: Danny Willett at The Belfry

2022: Danny Willett at The Belfry

The 1967 event was notable for providing British television with its first live hole in one, as Tony Jacklin aced the 16th hole at Royal St George’s.

The 2021 event was also notable, as Richard Bland at age 48, claimed his first European Tour victory in his 478th start on the tour.

OUR PICKS
ANIRBAN LAHIRI 70/1

Will take these odds all day with a player in this red hot form coming in.

So he plays all of his golf pretty much on the PGA Tour now and has done for quite some time and what a career he is putting together. He started 2022 very slow with plenty of missed cuts so his stats are not the best reading.

But one of our caddies was with his group at the Players this year and boy they were very impressed with his overall game and said he should have won that week.

Since then he has been very close to winning in Texas and only last week in Mexico.

I feel that a top ten bet would also be good here, he should carry on this good form so who knows.

He has over 18 international victories so knows how to seal the deal when asked.

MARC LEISHMAN 33/1

Another one of our favourite golfers to back is Marc. With six PGA Tour victories under his belt and at 28/1 and playing well it was a no brainer pick to be honest and feel he will be on most betting slips this week.

We followed him at the Farmers and the Genesis this year where he had two top twenties. The golf was not the best but his putting was off the chart so expect more of the same here and he seems to be rolling them in from everywhere this week in practice.

His last event was the Zurich and it was only a poor final round that cost him a higher finish.

Horses for courses fit here so should go well.

JONATHAN BYRD 300/1

My big odds wild pick goes to the big bird as we call him on tour Mr Byrd.

Funny enough it was only because we stayed in the same venue as him at the AT&T Pebble this year and got chatting to him that week. You might be surprised to hear he has won five times on the PGA Tour and only 44 years old plenty left to come.

One question we did ask him was what course does he like to play and why and guess what course was in his top three yes you guessed it the TPC Potomac. He said he just feels so at home on this track and loves the greens he played the Quicken Loans here and felt like he good score well.

The putter seems to be on fire so watch this space at 300/1 I am liking this a lot.

OTHERS ON THE HOT LIST
SUNG HOON KANG 125/1

Not in the best of form coming in, but word on the course is good and the team live seem to think he has a good chance to make the cut and push on this week. Already a winner on the PGA Tour so has pedigree.

JOEL DAHMEN 55/1
MIKKO KORHONEN 50/1

Always been a good banker for us over the years for those of you that were with us in 2018 we tipped him to win the Shot Clock Masters in June at 28/1. So the odds seem a lot better this week and feel he is primed ready for another win.

He also won the China Open in 2019 so has been a quite couple of years to be fair.

But he seems to play well in the UK and feel the Belfry is right up his alley.  We saw some of his best iron play in Spain a few weeks ago just the putter was a bit cold he looks good on the greens here already this week so if everything clicks watch this space a good bet here and could be adding number three DP World Tours wins.

JAZZ JANEWATTANANOND 100/1

We go back a long way with Jazz having been based in Thailand for quite a few years we got to meet Jazz many times on the Asian Tour. In fact we were at the Asian Tour International in 2010 where he was the youngest player to make the cut making history at the age of 14.

Still yet to break through and win on the DP World Tour but again feel this will happen very soon.

We were with him for the Asian Mixed Stableford Challenge this year where he played some of his best golf in 2022 and managed a tied sixth place finish that week. Since then he has made back to back cuts on the DP World Tour so the game is ready to put in a good solid week.

He has won six times over his career and feel the big one is around the corner his short game was looking dialled in this week, and the putter was hot so another watch this space guy here with some great odds.

CRAIG HOWIE 125/1

I believe this to be one of the best value bets of the week.  Coming in at over 100/1 was a surprise to me.

His 2022 results so far have been good:

  • Ras Al Khaimah – 21ST
  • Ras Al Classic – 30TH
  • Kenya Open – 42ND
  • Steyn – 37TH
  • Qatar Masters – 12TH
  • ISPS Spain – 30TH

So he has made the cut in all six events on the DP World Tour for 2022 and looks to carry that trend on to this week I am sure of it.

The Belfry plays to a good iron player as with Mikko I feel Craig is striking his irons pure right now.

His greens in regulation stat on the DP World Tour backs this up with a 71.76% greens in regulation is pretty impressive ranking 16th on the leader board.

Should make the cut then who knows.
