THE ZURICH CLASSIC

The Zurich Classic of New Orleans is a professional golf tournament on the PGA Tour, played in Avondale, Louisiana. Beginning 84 years ago in 1938 and held annually since 1958, it is commonly played in early to mid-spring. Zurich Insurance Group is the main sponsor, and it is organized by the Fore! Kids Foundation.

In 2017, the Zurich Classic became a team event, with eighty teams of two. One member of each team is initially chosen via the Tour priority rankings, and his partner must either be a PGA Tour member or earn entry through a sponsor exemption. The stroke play format was alternate shot (foursome) in the first and third rounds and better ball (four ball) for the second and fourth rounds. The cut line is 33 teams, plus ties. The winners earn 400 FedEx Cup points and two-year exemptions, but will not receive Masters Invitations and no world ranking points are awarded for the event. In 2018, the format switched to four ball for the first and third rounds and alternate shot for the second and fourth rounds.

NEW EVENT

The tournament was created as a one-off event after the ISPS Handa Championship in Japan was removed from the schedule in February 2022. It will be played the week before the Catalunya Championship; another one-off event which was created to replace the postponed Volvo China Open.

THE LAKES COURSE

18 holes, designed by Greg Norman, surround the wetlands of the Sèquia Major, a natural protected that surrounds the Lakes course by natural water obstacles.

Set amongst the natural landscape, intertwined with the regions interconnecting lake system and plantations, the Lakes provides its own unique experience for golfers. Its 18 holes meander around the Sequia Major – a collection of 14 lakes and wetlands that represent one of the most important ecosystems in the region.

THE 18TH HOLE

This will make for an exciting finish for us come Sunday afternoon. I played this hole from the tips and boy is it a test at around 540yards sounds an easy eagle hole, but not that easy when all you see is water left and right running all the way up this hole. I bailed out right on my second shot which is the play and what you will see a lot of the players doing this week which leaves a pretty simple up and down to make birdie. Accuracy around the whole course will be a must with 14 holes out of the 18 having water hazards.

OUR PICKS FOR THE WEEK

LOWRY/POULTER 20/1

Has to be the pick of the week for me. Two of the best putters in the game right now and the way Lowry is hitting it along with his short game what a team this will be. The postman also loves this format and should be delivering for us this week. NAP bet no more to be said.

HATTON/WILLET 28/1

Team England was always going to be on my list this week. What with it being St George’s day this Saturday it was written in the script. These two have grown my playing match play type events and both have had plenty of experience, could be a great chance to a win under their belt here.

Ninth place at the Dell Match Play was Hatton and Fitz also had a good week in a tie for 18th.

Could be a dream team here and will be having plenty of fun from what we have seen this week already.

GOOCH/HOMA 25/1

For my last bit of value with Max and Gooch, these are pretty tasty odds for two players in such good form right now. We caught a lot of Gooch’s play at the Masters a couple of weeks ago he impressed myself and the team a lot. The most impressive for me was his win at the RSM Classic last year he put his foot on the gas that week closing with a 64 and to win by three shots.

Max also a recent winner at the Fortinet Championship back in Sept 2021, he also carded a very nice 65 to win by one.

This pair seem to always play practice rounds together and the partnership seems very strong, I would not like to face them in a match play situation. Could be a dream Ryder Cup match up.

Could go well.

ROMAIN LANGASQUE 35/1

Romain was one of those players who really could have done without the break. His form before the Masters was pretty impressive.

  • 9TH – MyGolfLife Open March 2022
  • 8TH – Steyn City March 2022
  • 21ST – Qatar Masters March 2022

When he is normally on a good run it normally carries on for a while so will expect another good week from him here.

Digging some previous on this course we found he did play here back in 2018 and he managed a very good fifth place finish that week.

He likes the course a previous winner on the DP World Tour with plenty more to come watch this space.

CONNOR SYME 66/1

Going for yet another Conner this week but the man from Scotland could be our ticket to a final winner since March for us, and at 66’s it will be a great win for April.

His peak form stats are what has us interested this week. He ticks everything needed here to shoot low. Driving accuracy combined with a high greens in regulation is a must and he has that.

The team were with him at the Ras al Khaimah Classic where he looked like his iron play was some of the best we have seen for quite some time.

Yet to win on the DP World Tour but will be no surprise if he pops up and wins one very soon. Game is ready he is ready let’s see how this young scot starts Thursday.

JOACHIM B HANSEN 35/1

Loving JB’s chances here this week. Two time winner on the DP World Tour. His wins came at the Joburg Open in 2020 and again last year at the strong field at the AVIV Dubai Championship.

He has also won twice on the Challenge Tour winning the Made in Denmark and also the Turkish Airlines Challenge in 2018.

So he has earned his place here on the World Tour and following his wins so far he will win again in 2022. This will be a perfect fit for him and a great chance against a weaker field to get this job done.

The putter for me will be his advantage around here this week, when he is on is good like he can not miss. He could go very low and is a streaky player. Watch this space.

MARCUS HELLIGKILDE 80/1

This is a player we have followed for ages on the Challenge Tour how about this for a record to break through on the golf scene.

  • Winner – Finnish Challenge 2021
  • 2ND – B-NL Trophy 2021
  • Winner – Swiss Challenge 2021
  • 2ND – Costa Brava 2021
  • Winner – Tour Grand Final 2021
  • Best finish on the DP World was his last event at the Qatar Masters where he was placed in 12TH

This will be our wild card and hopefully he will have another great week. We had him down yesterday at 100/1 he has already come onto 80’s so must be getting backed.
